How Long Does a Foam Mattress Last? (What to Look For Before It Needs Replacing)

A mattress is not a forever purchase. But a good one should last you a long time. Here's the honest answer on lifespan — and how to tell when yours is done.

Average Lifespan by Foam Density Type

Not all foam is equal. The density of the foam — measured in kg/m³ — is the single biggest factor in how long a mattress will last.

Low-density foam (below 28 kg/m³) is the cheapest to manufacture. It feels soft at first but breaks down fast. You'll typically get 3 to 5 years out of it before it loses meaningful support.

Medium-density foam (28–35 kg/m³) is the entry point for quality. A well-made medium-density mattress lasts 6 to 8 years under normal use conditions.

High-density foam (35 kg/m³ and above) is what we use at Mr Mattress. Under normal conditions — one or two people sleeping on it nightly — a high-density foam mattress should last 8 to 12 years. Some go longer.

What High-Density Foam Actually Means for Longevity

Higher density means more foam material packed into the same space. More material means more resistance to compression. More resistance means the foam retains its shape for longer instead of developing the body impressions that make a mattress saggy and uncomfortable.

It's not a complicated concept — you're paying for more material, and more material lasts longer. That's the whole story.

Signs Your Mattress Needs Replacing

You don't need a certificate to tell you your mattress is done. Your body tells you first. Here are the clear signs:

Visible sagging: If the surface has indentations where you sleep — deeper than about 3cm — the foam has lost its structural integrity. It won't recover.

You wake up with back or neck pain that wasn't there before: A worn mattress stops supporting the spine properly. If you sleep fine on other surfaces but not on yours, the mattress is the problem.

You sleep better elsewhere: Hotel, guest room, sofa — if you're genuinely more rested anywhere else, your mattress is failing you.

You can feel the base through the mattress: If it feels thin or hard in certain spots, the foam has compressed down to near-nothing. Replace it.

How the Mr Mattress 10-Year Warranty Works

We back our mattresses with a 10-year warranty against manufacturing defects. This covers: abnormal sagging not caused by improper use, material defects in the foam or cover, and structural failures unrelated to normal wear.

What it doesn't cover: damage from liquid, improper support (using a mattress without a base), stains, or misuse. A warranty is not a subscription — take care of the mattress and it takes care of you.

The warranty applies to all our mattresses. Keep your proof of purchase and contact us if you have a concern.
