Full disclosure up front: this guide is published by Mr Mattress. We make foam mattresses. We could have written a page that says we win everything. We did not, because that is not true, and you would smell it a paragraph in. Where another brand does something better, we say so.
How we judged every mattress on this list
Four questions. The same four we would ask before buying any bed with our own money:
- Does the brand publish its foam density? Density (kg/m³) is the single biggest predictor of how long a mattress lasts. Brands that hide it usually have a reason.
- What does it cost against what is inside it? A famous label on cheap foam is still cheap foam.
- Can you test it at home? A 90-second lie-down in a showroom tells you nothing. A trial period in your own bedroom tells you everything.
- What does the warranty actually cover, in writing? Sagging depth, body impressions, who pays for transport on a claim.

Best if you are unsure about firmness: Sloom
Sloom makes South Africa's modular mattress. You can change the firmness at home by re-arranging the layers, and that is genuinely clever. If you honestly do not know what firmness you need, or you and your partner disagree, Sloom solves a real problem. The catch: you pay well over double a comparable foam bed for that flexibility. If you already know what firmness you want, you are paying for an adjustment you will use once or never.
The known name: Cloud Nine
Cloud Nine has made foam mattresses in South Africa for decades and the brand has real heritage, including a history of physiotherapy endorsement. Plenty of South Africans grew up on one. The catch: heritage is not a spec sheet. Compare the actual density and warranty terms of the model you are quoted against anything else on this list before you pay a heritage premium.
If you insist on springs: Sealy or Restonic
Some people want the bounce and the hotel-bed feel of a pocket spring, and the big spring names do it properly. Honest take: you will pay R10,000 or more for a quality queen spring set, the coils transfer movement between partners, and edges sag first. Springs are a preference buy, not a value buy. The one question that sorts the whole market
Ask any brand: what is the density of the support core, in kg/m³? That number decides whether your bed still supports you in year five or has a trench in the middle by year two. We publish ours. Most brands will not give you a straight answer. Draw your own conclusion from that.
