A good mattress shouldn't wait for a bonus. You can walk out with the bed now, or have it delivered this week, and split the payment in a way that fits your month. This guide covers every option we offer, honestly compared, with real Rand amounts.
Why everyone is suddenly paying for beds this way
Buy now pay later has quietly become the normal way South Africans buy big-ticket items. Around 7 in 10 credit-active consumers here have used it, and the strongest adopters are ordinary working households earning between R25,000 and R50,000 a month. Not because people are reckless. Because splitting a R5,000 purchase over a few months beats sleeping another year on a mattress that is finished.
Your back does not care what date your bonus pays out. If you are waking up stiff, the cheapest option is rarely waiting.
Option 1: Buy now, pay later in 2 to 6 instalments
This is the simplest one. At checkout on mrmattress.co.za, choose the instalment option, sign up in a few minutes, and pick a schedule between 2 and 6 instalments. The instalments are interest free. You pay the first one now, the bed ships, and the rest come off on the dates you chose.
Payments are processed by Stitch, the payment platform behind some of South Africa's biggest online brands, so your details are safe and the process is quick.
The maths on a real bed: our Revive memory foam mattress is R4,899 right now. Over 6 instalments that is R816.50 a month. For a 10-year mattress, that is less than a family takeaway night per month for half a year.
Option 2: Pay straight from your bank app, no card needed
Nearly 1 in 4 online card payments in South Africa fail. Wrong digits, daily limits, a 3D Secure SMS that never arrives. If that has happened to you, pay by bank fixes it.
Instead of typing card details, you choose your bank at checkout, approve the payment in your banking app, and you are done. If you bank with Capitec, this will feel familiar: Capitec Pay works exactly this way. No card, no typing numbers, no failed payment at the last step.
Option 3: Credit over up to 12 months
If you want a longer runway than 6 instalments, we offer credit through FeverTree Finance, a registered credit provider (NCRCP19967). You can pay over up to 12 months by debit order, approval usually takes about 30 minutes, and there are no penalties if you settle early.
To qualify you need to be a South African citizen between 18 and 65, earning at least R5,000 a month, with your ID and three months of bank statements ready. This is a normal credit agreement, so interest and fees apply according to your agreement. Read it before you sign, same as you would anywhere.
What about lay-by?
Lay-by still exists, and for some people it works: the shop keeps the bed, you pay it off over months, and when you finish paying you finally get it.
Read that again, though. With lay-by, you spend months paying for a new mattress while you keep sleeping on the old one. With buy now pay later, you sleep on the new bed from night one and pay as you go. Same discipline, but your back gets the benefit now instead of next year. That is the whole difference.
What do I need to qualify for instalments?
For the 2 to 6 instalment option: a South African ID number, a phone number, and a bank account or card for the scheduled payments. Sign-up happens at checkout and takes a few minutes. There is no lengthy application and no paperwork to email anyone.
For 12-month credit: the FeverTree requirements above.
If you are already stretched this month, an honest word: instalments are a tool, not free money. If the monthly amount does not fit comfortably in your budget, buy the smaller bed or wait a month. A mattress should fix your sleep, not your sleep and your overdraft.
Can I do this in-store or only online?
Both. Shop online and have your mattress delivered free anywhere in South Africa, or walk into one of our stores in Gauteng, the Free State and the Northern Cape and talk to a human first. The payment flexibility is the same either way.
Frequently asked questions
Can I buy a mattress on instalments in South Africa?

Is buy now pay later safe?
Yes. Instalment payments at Mr Mattress are processed by Stitch, the payment platform used by major South African brands. Your banking details are never stored by us, and every payment is approved by you.
What is the cheapest way to buy a good foam mattress?
Our Comfort foam range starts at R2,399. Split over instalments, that is a few hundred rand a month for a proper foam mattress with a 365-night trial. Entry price, real bed.
Can I use instalments in-store as well as online?
Yes. The same flexible payment options are available whether you buy online or in one of our stores. Ask in-store and we will walk you through it on the spot.
What happens if my card payment fails?
Do not retype it five times. Most card failures are daily limits or a 3D Secure step that never loads. Switch to pay by bank or Capitec Pay at checkout instead: you approve the payment in your banking app and it goes through first time.
