Buying a bed online is the smart way to do it. A nearby Mr Mattress store markup, no pushy salesman, better prices. But there are a few traps, and if you've been burned before, you already know it.
Here's how to spot the traps before they cost you.
Trap 1: The bed they're selling isn't actually in stock.
This is the big one. You order, you pay, and then you get an email saying it's out of stock and the supplier is "closed until January." Now they've got your money and you've got no bed.
How to avoid it: buy from someone who makes their own beds. A factory that builds locally isn't waiting on stock from overseas. Ask a simple question, "do you manufacture this yourself?" If the answer is no, be careful.
Trap 2: They go silent after you pay.
The friendliest company in the world before the sale can vanish the second your money clears. You phone, you email, nothing. It's the most common complaint in this whole industry.
How to avoid it: look at how they talk about delivery before you buy. Do they promise to keep you updated? Do they give you a real person to contact? Or is it all vague? How they handle communication before the sale is exactly how they'll handle it after.
Trap 3: A guarantee you can't actually use.
Big promises on the website. Then the bed sags and suddenly the warranty has ten conditions you never saw.
