That's not bad luck. It's a mattress that was never engineered for the load it was carrying.
I manufacture mattresses, so let me explain what weight actually does to a bed - and which specs tell you a mattress will cope.
Weight changes the maths of a mattress
Every mattress wears out the same way: the material fatigues under repeated compression, loses height, and stops pushing back. The heavier the sleeper, the deeper each compression and the faster that fatigue happens. A low-density foam that gives a lighter sleeper eight years can collapse in two under a heavier body - same mattress, same label, completely different lifespan.
That's why the specs matter more for heavier sleepers than for anyone else:
- Foam density (kg/m³): the kilograms of material per cubic metre. Higher density resists deep compression longer. This is the number that predicts lifespan under load.
- The support core: a steel coil core carries deep, concentrated load differently to foam - the coils flex and recover rather than slowly crushing.
- Endurance testing: a lab result that simulates years of compression is worth more than any adjective on a label.

The myth: heavier sleepers just need "the hardest bed"
Maximum hardness is not the answer. A surface that's too hard still creates pressure points at the shoulders and hips - a bigger problem, not a smaller one, when there's more body weight pressing into them. What a heavier sleeper actually needs is deep, durable support: a core that holds your spine level year after year, with enough surface give to spread pressure.
The distinction that matters isn't hard vs soft. It's engineered for load vs hoping for the best. And you can only tell them apart by the numbers: published density, a real support core, and an endurance test result.
The heavy sleeper's checklist
- Ask the density of the support core. No kg/m³ figure = no way to know how it holds up under load. Walk away.
- Favour a coil core or genuinely high-density foam. 50 kg/m³ foam or a steel coil system - not "luxury firm" with no numbers behind it.
- Ask if it's been endurance tested. EN 1957 is the European standard that mechanically simulates years of use. A pass is evidence; a promise is not.
- Read the warranty for a stated sag depth. Sagging is the failure mode that hits heavier sleepers first - the warranty must cover it measurably.
- Insist on a long home trial. Durability under your body weight only reveals itself over months, not in a showroom.
