What kills hotel mattresses (it's not the years - it's the variety)
A home mattress adapts to one or two consistent sleepers. A hotel mattress never gets that luxury: it absorbs a rotating population of body weights and positions, plus the point-loading no home bed sees - guests sitting on the same edge every morning to put shoes on, sitting against the headboard to work, perching luggage on the corner. The failure mode is almost always the same: the comfort layers collapse under concentrated, varied load, long before any structural component gives up. Which means hotel buying comes down to two specs:
- Density of the foam - the kg/m³ figure that determines how long comfort layers survive concentrated use.
- Tested durability - not "contract grade" as a phrase, but an actual endurance test result you can ask to see.

The feel question: a bed that suits every guest
Hotels can't ask guests their firmness preference at check-in. The workable answer across the industry is a firm-to-medium-firm surface with even support - it accommodates the widest range of body weights without hammocking heavier guests, and lighter sleepers tolerate firm far better than heavier sleepers tolerate soft.
