Somewhere on the internet right now, a mattress advert is promising to "stop snoring." Let me open with the honest version, as someone who manufactures mattresses for a living: no mattress cures snoring. Not one. Not ours, not anyone's.
What a mattress can do is more modest, but real: it can make the sleeping position that reduces snoring - side sleeping - comfortable enough that you actually stay in it all night. That's the whole honest mechanism, and it's worth understanding properly before you spend money.
Why position matters more than the mattress
The most common form of snoring is positional: on your back, gravity pulls the tongue and soft tissue toward the back of the throat, the airway narrows, and the vibration starts. Roll onto your side, and for many people the noise reduces or stops. Sleep researchers have known this for decades - it's why "sew a tennis ball into the back of the pyjamas" became folk wisdom.
So the practical question isn't "which mattress stops snoring?" It's "which mattress makes side sleeping comfortable enough to last a whole night?" Because if your shoulder and hip ache at 2am, you'll roll onto your back - and the noise comes back with you.

What side sleeping demands from a mattress
On your side, your body contact area shrinks and two pressure points - shoulder and hip - carry most of your weight. A too-hard surface pushes back at those points until you shift position; a sagging surface bends your spine sideways. What works is a contouring surface over a supportive high-density core: the shoulder and hip sink in enough to keep your spine level, while the core stops you sinking into a hammock.
Two honest add-ons while we're here:
- Your pillow is a co-conspirator. Side sleeping needs enough pillow height to keep your neck level - a flat pillow tilts the airway even on the right mattress.
- Loud, gasping or interrupted snoring can be sleep apnoea. That's a medical condition, and the right address for it is a doctor, not a bed shop. No mattress - ours included - treats it.
Where Mr Mattress fits (with the claim kept honest)
We build our mattresses in Gauteng, the Free State, Cape Town, East London, KwaZulu-Natal and Mpumalanga, and two of them suit the side-sleeping job:
- Revive Memory Foam - our side-sleeper pick: contouring, breathable open-cell memory foam over a high-density support core, from R4,899, 10-year written warranty. The surface lets the shoulder and hip settle in; the core keeps the spine level.
- Hybrid - for hot sleepers: a Bonnell steel coil core (a naturally ventilated chamber) under high-density foam layers, from R4,999. If heat is what drives you onto your back, airflow is your friend.
Neither will "cure" anything - and we won't tell you otherwise. What they will do is make the side position sustainable, and you can test that claim properly: every mattress comes with a 365-night home trial and free nationwide delivery, so the snoring verdict gets delivered by the person sharing your bed, not by our marketing.

Frequently asked questions
Can a mattress stop snoring?
No - no mattress cures snoring. A mattress can help indirectly by making side sleeping comfortable enough to maintain all night, which reduces positional snoring for many people.
What is the best mattress for a snorer in South Africa?
For most snorers, one that supports comfortable side sleeping: the Mr Mattress Revive - contouring open-cell memory foam over a high-density core, from R4,899 with a 10-year warranty and 365-night trial. Hot sleepers may prefer the Hybrid for its coil-core airflow.
When is snoring a medical problem?
Loud, gasping, or interrupted snoring with daytime exhaustion can indicate sleep apnoea. That needs a doctor, not a mattress - no bed treats a medical airway condition.
