Every summer the same complaint reaches our factory: "I love my mattress, but I wake up cooking at 2am." South Africa's heat is real, and so is the problem - but most of the advice about "cooling mattresses" is marketing fog. Gel this, graphite that, "climate technology" everything. I build mattresses for a living, so let me explain what actually makes a bed sleep hot, and what actually fixes it.
Heat isn't a memory foam problem. It's a cell-structure problem.
Memory foam earned its hot reputation honestly - but from one specific kind: closed-cell foam. In closed-cell foam, the tiny air bubbles inside the material are sealed off from each other. Air can't move, so your body heat has nowhere to go. It builds up at the surface, and by the small hours you're sleeping on a storage heater.
Open-cell foam is the opposite: the cell walls are open, so air moves through the material as you shift in the night. Heat escapes instead of accumulating. Same "memory foam" label in the shop; completely different night in February. The label to interrogate isn't "cooling" - it's whether the foam is open-cell or closed-cell. If the seller doesn't know, that's your answer.

The three things that actually decide how hot you sleep
- Cell structure. Open-cell breathes; closed-cell traps. This is the single biggest factor in foam mattresses.
- Airflow through the core. A steel coil chamber is mostly air. Every time you move, it pumps air through the mattress like a bellows. That's why spring-core beds have always slept cooler than solid budget foam.
- How deep you sink. The deeper a soft mattress hugs you, the more of your skin is in contact with foam, and the warmer you sleep. A firmer surface keeps you sleeping on the bed rather than in it - less contact, less trapped heat.
And the honest note: your mattress is one part of the system. A breathable cotton sheet, a ventilated room and a lighter duvet matter too. No mattress overcomes a polyester sheet in a Durban January.
