What Mattress Goes on a Montessori Floor Bed in South Africa

Mr Mattress Active Foam single, the firm 50 density mattress that fits a South African Montessori floor bed

Last updated: September 2026. Written by the people who cut the foam.

The short answer: a South African Montessori floor bed takes one of two mattress sizes and almost nothing else. A 140 x 70cm cot bed size, or a standard single at 92 x 188cm. For a child's first proper bed we recommend the Active Foam Single at R3,399, a 50 density foam and our firmest build. The 140 x 70 is cut in our Comfort Foam at R1,699. There is no such thing as a Montessori certified mattress, because no certification body issues one. What the bed needs is three things: firm, low, snug.

This guide exists because of a sentence. Every floor bed sold in this country carries it. WoodStyle says it. Declan and Leah say it. Bambino Boutique says it. Lifeforce Living say it. Even the Takealot bundles that do include something include an unbranded foam sheet. The sentence is mattress not included, and it means the frame arrives on a Tuesday and by Tuesday evening a parent is on Google trying to work out what goes in it.

We make mattresses in Bloemfontein. We kept taking that call, so we measured the frames.

The age rule, before anything else. A mattress on or near the floor is for a child of 12 months and older. Under 12 months the American Academy of Pediatrics, Red Nose in Australia and the Lullaby Trust in the United Kingdom all say the same thing: a cot, a bassinet or a play yard, and nothing else. Montessori writers such as Simone Davies suggest a floor bed from crawling, about nine months. We follow the safe sleep bodies, not the furniture trend, so we will not sell you a floor mattress for a baby under one. Between 12 and 18 months it can work, but only in a properly child proofed room, and speak to your clinic sister first.

The frames, measured

Read off each maker's own website in September 2026. Measure the inside of your own frame before you order, because makers change models and a five centimetre error is the difference between snug and a gap a small arm fits into.

Frame Takes Frame price The mattress that fits
WoodStyle, Baltic birch, Cape Town 140 x 70cm R4,350 Comfort Foam Toddler, R1,699
WoodStyle single 188 x 91cm R4,990 Active Foam Single, R3,399
Declan and Leah, SA pine Single, Three Quarter or Double R3,800 to R6,450 Single R3,399, Three Quarter R3,799, Double R4,299
Bambino Boutique Floorbed Star Child, SA pine 190 x 94cm inside Ask the maker Active Foam Single, R3,399. A 92 x 188 mattress sits inside 190 x 94 with a small gap each side
Lifeforce Living Classic Montessori Single, removable rails Ask the maker Active Foam Single, R3,399
Presidential Royal Kids, with storage drawers 200 x 90cm Ask the maker Extra length frame. Use the Revive Single Extra Length, R5,879
Takealot Montessori Brite or Forwood bundle Toddler, pad included Bundle The included pad is an unbranded foam sheet. If you keep the frame, the Comfort Foam Toddler at R1,699 is the upgrade
Marketplace or Gumtree, second hand or small maker Measure it. Usually 140 x 70 or single R1,000 to R6,300 Measure inside edge to inside edge, then match to the two sizes above

Two of those are worth calling out. Presidential Royal Kids at 200 x 90cm is an extra length frame, and a standard single will leave you twelve centimetres short at the foot. And Bambino Boutique at 190 x 94cm inside is the one people assume needs a custom cut. It does not. A 92 x 188 single sits in it with a small margin, which is exactly what you want.

The part every other guide hand waves: rail geometry

The point of a floor bed frame is the lip. The lip is what stops a sleeping child rolling out onto the floor. Which means the only thickness rule that actually matters is this one:

The mattress must sit low enough that the rail still stands proud of it. If the top of the mattress is level with or above the top of the rail, the rail has become decoration and you have reintroduced the fall you bought the frame to remove.

The international guides give you numbers, and they are useful as a starting point. Sprout says 10 to 20cm. Little Duck calls 8 to 15cm ideal and 18cm or more not recommended. Declan and Leah's own guide says 12 to 15cm. But a number cannot know how tall your rail is. Put the mattress in, look at it from the side, and check that there is still a lip.

The common mistake is putting a thick adult mattress into a low frame because it was spare. It fits the footprint, it defeats the purpose.

Firm is a number, not a word on a swing ticket

Every shop in the country says firm, because firm sells. The number that decides whether a mattress holds a child or slowly collapses under them is foam density, measured in kilograms per cubic metre.

Density What it means for a child Where you find it in South Africa
Under 26 Too soft for a child under three. Develops a hollow inside a year. Most R650 to R750 toddler pads. One widely sold example is a 20 density, 90mm sheet at R745
28 to 32 Medium firm. Workable from about two years old. Mid range kids mattresses
33 to 38 Firm. What the international floor bed guides call ideal from twelve months. Specialist imports
50 Our Active Foam. Above every band above, and our firmest build. Active Foam Single R3,399

The hand test, if you are shopping anywhere else. Press your palm flat into the mattress and lift it off. If the shape of your hand is still there more than a second later, it is too soft for a child under three. It is crude and it works, and it costs nothing to do in a showroom.

Where you are changes the answer

This is the part no other guide bothers with, and it is what parents actually phone us about.

  • Johannesburg and Pretoria. The biggest cluster of floor bed frames in the country trades here, a lot of it second hand on Marketplace, and the South African Montessori Association splits Gauteng into two regions of its own, the only province it does that for. Your local problem is winter. A tiled Highveld floor in July is cold, and a mattress lying flat on it pulls that cold up all night. Buy the frame with legs. Do not put the mattress on the tiles.
  • Cape Town. WoodStyle is here and this is a birch, design led market. Their two sizes are the two in the table, and their single at 188 x 91 is the size our Active Foam Single was already cut for.
  • Durban and both coasts. Humidity, not cold. A mattress flat on a floor has no air moving under it, and above roughly 60 percent relative humidity mould can start underneath within two to four weeks. Slatted frame, and stand it against a wall for an hour once a week.
  • Bloemfontein. Our factory. It is the reason we can cut a 140 x 70 at all when the rest of the trade only stocks standard sizes.
  • Gqeberha, East London, Polokwane, Nelspruit, Kimberley, Upington. No local frame maker. Parents order the frame online and the mattress separately and both arrive by courier. Our delivery is free nationwide and typically three to seven working days, which in practice means the mattress usually beats the frame, because most frames are made to order on a fifteen working day lead time.

Buy once, and here is the arithmetic

The furniture trade's own rule is that a bed is outgrown when the child's head and feet come within ten centimetres of the ends. So the usable height of a mattress is its length minus twenty centimetres. Apply that to the two sizes:

Mattress Length Comfortable up to a child of Which is roughly
Toddler / cot bed 140cm 120cm tall about six to seven years old
Single 188cm 168cm tall about fourteen to sixteen, and many adults
Three Quarter 188cm 168cm tall same length as a single, 15cm wider
Single extra length 200cm 180cm tall a tall teenager or an adult

A single at 188cm is comfortable for a child up to about 168cm tall. That is most South Africans somewhere in their mid teens, and a good many adults. A single bought at eighteen months is genuinely the last mattress of childhood. At R3,399 across ten years that is under thirty rand a month, and you never do the shopping twice.

The 140 x 70 at R1,699 is the right call in exactly two situations: the frame you already own is a 140 x 70, or the room genuinely cannot take a single. We cut it, we sell it, and we will not pretend it is the better long term buy when it is not.

What we would actually put in the room

We sell two foams and we will tell you plainly which one goes where. The size decides most of it for you.

If this is you Buy Price
Child is leaving the cot and the room takes a normal bed Active Foam Single. 50 density, our firmest build, 92 x 188cm R3,399
The frame you already own is a 140 x 70 Comfort Foam Toddler 140 x 70, the only mattress we cut at that size R1,699
You read to them lying down and want the room Active Foam Three Quarter, 107 x 188cm R3,799
A second bed, an older child, budget is tight Comfort Foam Single R2,399
The frame measures 200cm long Revive Single Extra Length R5,879

If you only read one line: for a child's first proper bed, the Active Foam Single at R3,399 is the one we recommend and the one we would put in our own children's rooms. It is a 50 density foam, which is above every band the international children's mattress guides call ideal, it is our firmest build, and at 188cm it is still the right length when they are sixteen.

What comes with it. SABS approved foam and a Confidence in Textiles cover fabric, which are the two marks that mean something in South Africa. A 365 night trial, which is a full year, against the 100 nights the big bed chains offer and the nothing at all a furniture maker offers on a mattress. A 10 year warranty. 30 day money back. Free delivery anywhere in the country, typically three to seven working days from our factory in Bloemfontein.

The cover, honestly

Quilted, and it is not removable. You cannot unzip it and put it in the machine. It is washable in place: spot clean with warm water and a mild soap, then let it dry completely before you make the bed. We would rather tell you now than have you find out on the first accident.

Questions we get asked

Is there such a thing as a Montessori mattress?

No. There is no Montessori standard for mattresses and no certification body issues one. Anything sold to you as Montessori certified is a marketing line. What a Montessori floor bed needs is a mattress that is firm, low and a snug fit for the frame. Ours is Montessori suggested and we say it that way deliberately.

What size mattress fits a Montessori floor bed in South Africa?

Either 140 x 70cm for a cot bed frame, or a standard South African single at 92 x 188cm. Measure the inside of your frame edge to edge before ordering. WoodStyle, Declan and Leah, Bambino Boutique and Lifeforce Living all sell single sized frames. Presidential Royal Kids is 200 x 90cm, which is an extra length frame and catches people out.

At what age can my child use a floor bed?

From 12 months at the earliest, and 18 months to three years is when most South African families actually make the move. Under 12 months the answer is a cot, a bassinet or a play yard, which is the position of the American Academy of Pediatrics, Red Nose and the Lullaby Trust.

How thick should a floor bed mattress be?

Thin enough that the frame rail still stands proud of the mattress once it is in. The international guides land between 8 and 20cm and most say 10 to 15cm. The test that matters is geometric, not a number: if the mattress sits level with or above the rail, the rail is decoration and the fall is back.

How firm should it be?

Firm. Press your palm flat into the surface and lift it. If the hand shape is still visible more than a second later, it is too soft for a child under three. The number behind it is foam density. Under 26 is too soft, the guides call 33 to 38 ideal, and our Active Foam is 50.

Can I put the mattress straight on the floor with no frame?

You can, and many Montessori parents do. Be aware that a mattress lying flat on tile or wood has no airflow underneath, so in a room above about 60 percent humidity mould can begin within two to four weeks. If you skip the frame, stand the mattress against a wall for an hour once a week.

Will it go mouldy in Durban?

Not if it can breathe. Use a slatted frame so air moves underneath and air the mattress weekly. The coast is where this matters most. Inland the opposite problem applies: a tiled Johannesburg or Pretoria floor in winter is cold and pulls that cold up all night, and a frame with legs fixes both.

Is the cover washable?

It is washable but it does not come off. Spot clean with warm water and a mild soap and let it dry fully before making the bed. At toddler age, put a mattress protector over it.

Is the foam safe for a child?

Our foam is SABS approved and the cover fabric carries Confidence in Textiles. Those are the two marks that mean something in South Africa. CertiPUR and GREENGUARD are American programmes quoted on overseas websites and they are not part of the South African supply chain.

Do you make a cot mattress?

No. Our smallest size is the 140 x 70cm toddler, and we would not sell you a floor mattress for a baby under one year old. Buy a proper cot mattress sized to your cot from a cot specialist and come back when the child moves out of it.

Do you deliver outside the big cities?

Free delivery anywhere in South Africa, usually three to seven working days. Most of our floor bed orders go to provinces with no local frame maker at all, and the mattress often arrives before the frame because most frames are made to order on a fifteen working day lead time.

What if my child hates it?

You have 365 nights. Not 100, not 30. A full year to find out whether it suits your child, and 30 days for a straight money back if you change your mind early.

Sleep better. 365 night trial. 10 year warranty. 30 day money back guarantee.
