Soft-surface vs soft-through: the only distinction that matters
There are two completely different ways to build a mattress that feels soft:
- Soft-through: soft all the way down - plush surface, soft core. It feels dreamy in the showroom. Then your hips sink until your spine bows, and it gets worse every year as the foam relaxes.
- Soft-surface: a plush, contouring comfort layer over a dense, supportive core. Your shoulders and hips settle in, but the core keeps your spine level all night.
When people say they love a soft bed, the feeling they love almost always comes from the surface. The damage, when it comes, always comes from the core. Buy the surface feel - never buy a soft core.

How to tell them apart before you buy
- Ask what the support core density is. A soft mattress with a high-density core (45+ kg/m³) is a soft-surface build. A soft mattress with no published core density is a gamble.
- Press down hard in the middle of the mattress. If your hand keeps sinking with little resistance, that softness goes all the way down.
- Check the warranty length. Soft-through builds sag fast, and their sellers know it - short or vague warranties are the tell.
Who genuinely benefits from a soft mattress
Three groups, honestly: side sleepers (shoulders and hips need somewhere to settle), lighter bodies under about 60 kg (a firm bed never compresses enough to support them properly), and anyone waking with pressure marks at the shoulder or hip.
