Almost every toddler mattress sold in South Africa hides the one number that matters. Foam density tells you whether a mattress will still be flat in three years or whether it will have a hollow where your child sleeps, and the common toddler pad in this country is a 20 density foam sheet selling between R650 and R750. Our Active Foam is a 50 density, and we print it, because printing it is the entire point.
This is not a list of products with affiliate links. It is one number, what it means, how to check it yourself in a shop without trusting anybody, and what it costs you either way.
What density actually is
Density is mass per cubic metre of foam. It is written as 20D or 50D, or as kg/m3, and it is not the same thing as firmness even though the two words get used interchangeably by people selling beds.
Firmness is how the surface feels on day one. Density is how much foam is actually in there. Density is what decides how long that day one feel survives.
A low density foam can be made to feel firm in a showroom. Eight months later it is soft, because there was never enough material in it to carry the load. That is the whole explanation for why a cheap toddler mattress develops a dip. It did not wear out. It was never dense enough to begin with, and the dip was always coming.
| Density | What it means for a child | Where you find it |
|---|---|---|
| Under 26 | Too soft for a child under three. A hollow forms inside a year. | Most R650 to R750 toddler pads sold in South Africa, including a widely sold 20 density, 90mm sheet at R745 |
| 28 to 32 | Medium firm. Workable from about two years old. | Mid range kids mattresses |
| 33 to 38 | Firm. What the international children mattress guides call ideal from twelve months. | Specialist imports |
| 50 | Our Active Foam. Above every band above, and our firmest build. | Active Foam Single R3,399, Three Quarter R3,799 |
What is actually on the South African market
Here is the honest benchmark, with real prices, so you can see where the money goes.
| Product | Size | Price | Density published? |
|---|---|---|---|
| A widely sold SA toddler mattress | 129 x 71 x 11cm | R745 | Yes, 20 density, 90mm foam core. Credit where it is due, they print it |
| A major baby retailer toddler mattress | 66 x 132cm | R649.90 | No figure published |
| Takealot Montessori bed bundles | Toddler | Bundle price | Unbranded foam sheet, no figure |
| Mr Mattress Comfort Foam Toddler | 140 x 70cm | R1,699 | High resilience foam, quilted cover, SABS approved |
| Mr Mattress Active Foam Single | 92 x 188cm | R3,399 | Yes. 50 density. Our firmest build |
Notice what the cheap end has in common. It is not that they are bad people. It is that at R650 to R750, including a cover, a courier and a retail margin, there is not much budget left for foam. The number follows the price, and the dip follows the number.

How to check it yourself, two free tests
- Ask for the number. Ask what the foam density is. If the answer comes back as "high density" with no figure attached, that is not an answer, it is a word. Any manufacturer who is proud of the number prints the number. We print ours because 50 is a good number.
- The hand test. Press your palm flat into the surface and lift it off. If the shape of your hand is still visible more than a second later, the mattress is too soft for a child under three. This works in any showroom, on any brand, and nobody can talk you out of what you just saw.

Why a small child needs the firmer one
This is counterintuitive, so it is worth the paragraph. A two year old weighs eleven to fourteen kilograms. That is not enough weight to compress a soft mattress into anything resembling support. An adult sinks into a soft mattress and it pushes back. A toddler does not weigh enough to reach that point, so instead of being held flat they settle into a hollow and sleep in a curve.
The firmer surface keeps them flat. It is also, conveniently, the surface that is still flat in three years, which matters a great deal when you are trying to buy once. Both arguments point the same way, which is not always true in this trade.
What this costs across childhood
| Route | What you spend | How many purchases |
|---|---|---|
| R745 toddler pad at two, a single at six, another single at twelve | R745 plus two mattresses | Three |
| Active Foam Single at two | R3,399, under R30 a month across ten years | One, with a 10 year warranty |
The single is not the cheaper option this month. It is the cheaper option by the time the child is in high school, and it is the only one of the two routes where nobody sleeps in a hollow along the way.
The age rule, before anything else. A mattress on or near the floor is for a child of 12 months and older. Under 12 months the American Academy of Pediatrics, Red Nose in Australia and the Lullaby Trust in the United Kingdom all say the same thing: a cot, a bassinet or a play yard, and nothing else. Montessori writers such as Simone Davies suggest a floor bed from crawling, about nine months. We follow the safe sleep bodies, not the furniture trend, so we will not sell you a floor mattress for a baby under one. Between 12 and 18 months it can work, but only in a properly child proofed room, and speak to your clinic sister first.
What we would actually put in the room
The density argument only tells you which foam. Here is which product, at which size.
| If this is you | Buy | Price |
|---|---|---|
| Child is leaving the cot and the room takes a normal bed | Active Foam Single. 50 density, our firmest build, 92 x 188cm | R3,399 |
| The frame you already own is a 140 x 70 | Comfort Foam Toddler 140 x 70, the only mattress we cut at that size | R1,699 |
| You read to them lying down and want the room | Active Foam Three Quarter, 107 x 188cm | R3,799 |
| A second bed, an older child, budget is tight | Comfort Foam Single | R2,399 |
| The frame measures 200cm long | Revive Single Extra Length | R5,879 |
If you only read one line: for a child's first proper bed, the Active Foam Single at R3,399 is the one we recommend and the one we would put in our own children's rooms. It is a 50 density foam, which is above every band the international children's mattress guides call ideal, it is our firmest build, and at 188cm it is still the right length when they are sixteen.
What comes with it. SABS approved foam and a Confidence in Textiles cover fabric, which are the two marks that mean something in South Africa. A 365 night trial, which is a full year, against the 100 nights the big bed chains offer and the nothing at all a furniture maker offers on a mattress. A 10 year warranty. 30 day money back. Free delivery anywhere in the country, typically three to seven working days from our factory in Bloemfontein.
The cover, honestly
Quilted, and it is not removable. You cannot unzip it and put it in the machine. It is washable in place: spot clean with warm water and a mild soap, then let it dry completely before you make the bed. We would rather tell you now than have you find out on the first accident.

Questions we get asked
What is a good foam density for a child?
Above 33 for a child under three. The international children mattress guides call 33 to 38 ideal from twelve months and treat anything under 26 as too soft. Our Active Foam is 50, which is above all of those bands.
Is density the same as firmness?
No, and they get confused constantly. Firmness is how the surface feels on day one. Density is how much foam is actually in there, which decides how long that feel lasts. A low density foam can feel firm in a showroom and be soft in eight months.
Why do cheap toddler mattresses develop a dip?
Because they were never dense enough. It is not wear, it is material. A 20 density foam under repeated load compresses permanently, and the hollow forms exactly where the child sleeps every night.
How do I check density in a shop?
Ask for the number. If the answer is high density with no figure, that is not an answer. Then press your palm flat into the surface and lift it. If the hand shape is still visible more than a second later, it is too soft for a child under three.
Can a toddler sleep on memory foam?
They can, but we would still point you at the firmer foam at this age. Memory foam is designed to let you sink in, and a small child does not need that. Our Active Foam at 50 density holds them on top of the mattress rather than in it.
Does a heavier child need a different density?
Density matters more the more load there is, but at toddler weights the argument for a high density is longevity rather than support. An eleven to fourteen kilogram child will not compress a good foam. The same mattress is still supporting them at nine years old and forty kilograms, which is the point.
Do you publish the density of all your mattresses?
Yes. Active Foam is 50. It is on the product page, and it is the number to compare us on.
Is a more expensive mattress always denser?
No. Price includes the cover, the brand, the retail margin and the showroom. Density is the only part of the price that tells you about the foam. Ask for the figure and compare that.
What about SABS and the overseas certifications?
SABS approved foam and a Confidence in Textiles cover are the marks that mean something in South Africa. CertiPUR and GREENGUARD are American programmes you will see quoted on overseas websites and they are not part of the South African supply chain.
What size should I buy at two years old?
A standard single at 92 x 188cm if the room takes one, because it is still the right mattress at sixteen. The 140 x 70 cot bed size only if that is the frame you already own.
Sleep better. 365 night trial. 10 year warranty. 30 day money back guarantee.
