How the Traditional Mattress Supply Chain Works
Most mattresses in South Africa travel through three hands before they reach your bedroom. First, a manufacturer makes the mattress. Then a distributor buys it in bulk, adds a margin, and sells it to retailers. Then a retailer marks it up again to cover their showroom, staff, and advertising costs.
By the time that mattress reaches the shop floor, the retail price can be 40% to 60% higher than what it cost to make. Sometimes more. Every step in that chain adds cost, and the customer pays for all of it.
What Mr Mattress Removed
We didn't reinvent the mattress. We shortened the road it travels to reach you.
We manufacture in our own and approved partner facilities across South Africa, with facilities across six South African regions. We sell it ourselves, in our own stores and online, with no massive showroom lease on a prime corner somewhere in a shopping mall. What you pay goes toward foam, fabric, and delivery, not someone else's overhead.
That's the whole model. It's simple. But it makes a real difference to the price.
What the Maths Actually Look Like
Let's say a queen-size foam mattress costs R3,500 to manufacture. A traditional retailer would need to at least double that to cover their supply chain and overheads. You'd pay R7,000 to R8,500 in a store.
We sell our queen range from R3,699 to R7,199. You're paying close to the cost of production, not the cost of a whole retail ecosystem.
That's not a promotional gimmick. That's what happens when the maker and the seller are the same business.
