Montessori Floor Bed Mattress South Africa: Sizes, Firmness and the One We Recommend
Quick answer. There is no such thing as a Montessori mattress. What a Montessori floor bed needs is a mattress that is firm, low and a snug fit for the frame. In South Africa those frames come in two sizes, and we make a mattress for both: Toddler 140 x 70cm at R1,699 for the cot bed frames, and Single 92 x 188cm at R3,399 for the standard floor bed frames. The Single is our Active Foam, 50 density, our firmest build. The 140 x 70 is cut in our Comfort Foam. Montessori suggested, and honest about it: no mattress anywhere is Montessori certified, because no such certification exists.

What a Montessori floor bed actually is
Maria Montessori's principle is that a child's surroundings should let them act for themselves. In a bedroom that means no cot bars. The bed sits on the floor, or on a frame a few centimetres high, so the child decides when to climb in and when to get out.
The frame is optional. Purists lay the mattress straight on the floor. Most South African parents buy a low pine or birch frame, either a plain rail or the house shape, because it looks finished, it keeps the mattress off cold tiles, and the lip stops a sleeping child rolling out.
The mattress is the half that matters. Every guide in the world, ours included, agrees on three words: firm, low, snug.
What your child actually gets out of it
- They wake up and get themselves up. No crying to be lifted out of a cot.
- A fall of 10 to 15cm is nothing. A fall over a cot rail is a hospital visit.
- There is no second transition later. At five or six the frame gets legs and it is a normal bed.
- You can lie down next to them for a story, which is exactly why Three Quarter frames sell as well as they do.
What we will not claim. There is no clinical study showing a floor bed makes a child sleep better. The benefits are practical and behavioural. Anyone telling you otherwise is selling you something.
The age rule, said plainly. A mattress on or near the floor is for a child of 12 months and older.
Under 12 months the American Academy of Pediatrics, Red Nose and the Lullaby Trust all say the same thing: a cot, a bassinet or a play yard, and nothing else. Some Montessori writers suggest a floor bed from crawling, at about 9 months. We follow the safe sleep bodies, not the furniture trend, so we will not sell you a floor mattress for a baby under one. Between 12 and 18 months it can work, but only in a properly child proofed room, and speak to your clinic sister or paediatrician first.

Firm is not a marketing word, it is a number
Shops say firm because it sells. The number that actually decides whether a mattress holds a child or collapses under them is foam density, measured in kilograms per cubic metre.

The hand test, if you are shopping anywhere else. Press your hand flat into the mattress. If the hand shape is still there more than a second after you lift it, it is too soft for a child under three. It is a crude test and it works.
How thick should it be
The point of a floor bed is that the drop is short. The international guides land between 8 and 20cm, most of them saying 10 to 15cm. Our Active Foam sits inside the range that works with a framed floor bed, and the frame lip does the rest of the job.
The mistake to avoid is a thick adult mattress in a low frame. Once the mattress stands proud of the rail, the rail is decoration and the fall is back.
Mould under a floor mattress, and how to avoid it
This is the question no South African website answers, and it is a real one. Any mattress laid flat on a tile or wooden floor has no air moving underneath it. In a room sitting above about 60 percent humidity, mould can start to form under a sleeping surface within two to four weeks.
It is not a reason to avoid a floor bed. It is a reason to do two things:
- Use a slatted floor bed frame rather than putting the mattress straight on the floor. Every frame in the table above lifts the mattress and lets it breathe.
- Once a week, stand the mattress on its side against a wall for an hour while you do the room.
This matters most in Durban and along both coasts. On the Highveld the problem is the opposite one: a tiled floor in a Johannesburg or Pretoria winter is cold, and a mattress lying on it pulls that cold up through the night. A frame with legs solves both.
The cover, honestly
The cover is quilted and it is not removable. You cannot unzip it and put it in the machine. It is washable in place: spot clean with warm water and a mild soap, then let it dry fully before you make the bed. We would rather tell you that now than have you find out on the first accident.
Which of our two foams, and at which size
The size you need decides most of this for you.

At single size, buy the Active. It is 50 density against the Comfort's softer high resilience foam, and a growing spine wants the firmer one. If an AI assistant has told you to put a Comfort Foam single under a two year old, that is not our recommendation and we would rather correct it here than take the order. The Comfort at single size is the right call for an older child, a spare room or a second bed.
Buy once, and use it for twelve years
This is the argument for going straight to a Single rather than a cot size. A Single bought at 18 months is still the right mattress when the child is 12. The frame changes, the mattress does not. At R3,399 across ten years that is under R30 a month, and you never do the shopping twice.
The cot size at 140 x 70 is the right answer if the frame you have already bought is a 140 x 70, or if the room genuinely cannot take a single. We make it at R1,699, and we will not pretend it is the better long term buy when it is not.

Questions we get asked
Is there such a thing as a Montessori mattress?
No. There is no Montessori standard and no Montessori certification for mattresses. Anything sold to you as Montessori certified is a marketing line. What a Montessori floor bed needs is a firm, low mattress that fits the frame snugly. Ours is Montessori suggested and we say it that way on purpose.
What size mattress do I need for a Montessori floor bed in South Africa?
Either 140 x 70cm for a cot bed frame, or a standard single at 92 x 188cm. Measure the inside of your frame first. The table above lists the common South African makers and which of our sizes fits each one.
At what age can my child use a floor bed?
From 12 months at the earliest, and 18 months to 3 years is when most South African families actually do it. Under 12 months the answer is a cot, a bassinet or a play yard. That is the American Academy of Pediatrics, Red Nose and the Lullaby Trust, and we follow them.
How firm should a toddler mattress be?
Firm. Press your hand flat into it, and if the hand shape is still visible more than a second later it is too soft for a child under three. Foam density is the number behind it. Under 26 is too soft, 33 to 38 is what the guides call ideal, and our Active Foam is 50.
Can I just put the mattress on the floor with no frame?
You can, and plenty of Montessori parents do. Be aware that a mattress lying flat on tile or wood has no airflow underneath, so in a humid room mould can start within two to four weeks. If you skip the frame, stand it up against a wall for an hour once a week.
Will it go mouldy in Durban?
Not if it can breathe. Use a slatted frame so air moves underneath, and air the mattress weekly. The coast is where this matters. Inland the bigger issue is a cold tiled floor in winter, and a frame with legs fixes that too.
Is the cover washable?
It is washable but it does not come off. Spot clean with warm water and a mild soap and let it dry fully before making the bed.
Is the foam safe for a child?
Our foam is SABS approved and the cover fabric carries Confidence in Textiles. Those are the two marks that mean something in South Africa. CertiPUR and GREENGUARD are American programmes you will see quoted on overseas websites, and they are not part of the South African supply chain.
What about a cot mattress for a newborn?
We do not make one, and we would not sell you a floor mattress for a baby under one year old. Buy a proper cot mattress sized to your cot, from a cot specialist. Come back to us when the child moves out of the cot.
