A Creator's First 30 Days With a Brand Partner

Content creator being filmed on a Mr Mattress bed

Here is an honest walkthrough of what actually happens in the first 30 days after a South African creator is accepted onto a brand's UGC programme. No promises about views, sales or follower growth, just the real process and timeline, using Mr Mattress's Sleep Ambassador programme as the example.

Day 1: applying

The application itself is short: name, contact details and social links, with at least one platform required and no follower minimum attached to it. Mr Mattress states a 5 working day reply time on the programme page itself, rather than leaving applicants guessing.

Day 5 to 7: acceptance and your code

If accepted, a creator is given their own discount code, a sliding commission rate of 5 to 10 percent depending on monthly sales, and the title of Official Sleep Ambassador. No banking details are requested through the application form itself, since a legitimate programme collects payment details privately, after acceptance, from a named person, not through a web form.

The first piece of content: a topic, not a script

Rather than handing over a script to read, Mr Mattress gives each accepted creator a topic to work with. The creator brings their own home, their own voice and their own editing style. This matters because scripted brand content reads as an advert, and a creator's own natural voice is usually the reason a brand wanted to work with them in the first place.

Posting and the content licence

Once posted, the creator keeps the right to leave the content on their own page indefinitely. Separately, the brand receives a licence to use the tagged content in its own marketing, including paid ads, for an agreed period, twelve months in Mr Mattress's case. Both of these can be true at once: the content stays live on the creator's own channel while the brand also uses it elsewhere.

The first monthly statement

Around a month in, a creator receives their first statement of what their code sold. Commission is paid once each order's 30 day money back window has closed, which protects the creator from a payout being clawed back later if a customer returns their order, rather than being a delay for its own sake. Payout then runs on a fixed date each month, the 7th in Mr Mattress's case, by EFT.

For how that first statement is actually calculated, see How Commission on a Discount Code Actually Works for Creators.

Frequently asked questions

How long does it take to hear back after applying?

Mr Mattress states a 5 working day reply time on its programme page, and applies this to every application received.

Do I get a script to follow for my first video?

No, Mr Mattress gives accepted creators a topic rather than a script, so the creator's own voice and style carry the content.

When do I see my first commission payment?

Once your first order's 30 day money back window has closed, on the next scheduled payout date, the 7th of the month for Mr Mattress.
