Foam vs Innerspring on Gravel Roads: What Corrugation Does to a Caravan Mattress

The short answer: a house mattress only ever experiences load when someone is lying on it. A caravan mattress spends hours being shaken at speed on corrugated dirt with nobody on it at all. That is a fundamentally different wear pattern, and it is the main practical argument for foam over innerspring in a touring caravan. Foam has no discrete metal components to fatigue, work loose or corrode.

What corrugation actually does

A corrugated gravel road applies rapid, repetitive vertical vibration to everything in the caravan. Suspension and tyres absorb a portion of it. What is left travels through the chassis, into the floor, into the bed base, and into whatever is lying on it.

For a solid block of foam, this is fairly undramatic. Foam is a continuous cellular material with no joints, no fasteners and no separate parts to move relative to one another. It flexes and returns.

An innerspring unit is a different proposition. It is an assembly: individual coils, the wire or fabric connecting them, edge reinforcement, and the layers above. Vibration acts on every one of those interfaces. Over enough kilometres, assemblies with many discrete parts are more prone to noise, loosening and localised fatigue than a single continuous material is.

Add salt air on a coastal Eastern Cape run, or the general damp and condensation that all caravans deal with, and steel components have a second problem that foam simply does not have.

The honest caveat: a well-made pocket-coil unit is not going to disintegrate on a gravel road, and some caravan suppliers sell good sprung mattresses with legitimate load ratings. The argument for foam is about weight, simplicity and long-run reliability, not about spring mattresses being bad products.

Weight, which is the other half of the argument

Every kilogram in a caravan comes out of your payload allowance, and payload is usually tighter than people expect once water, gas, recovery gear and food are loaded.

An innerspring mattress carries a steel coil unit; a foam mattress does not. In practice swapping a sprung caravan mattress for foam typically saves in the region of 15 to 25kg. That is meaningful when you are close to your limit, and it is weight carried high up in the van rather than low down, which also affects how the caravan tows.

There is a practical benefit too. You will be lifting this mattress regularly to get at the storage underneath and to air it out, which is the main thing preventing condensation mould. A foam mattress you can lift with one hand actually gets lifted. A heavy sprung one tends not to.

The shape problem that settles it for many people

Most modern caravan beds are not rectangles. Island beds taper or round off at the foot so you can walk past. French beds have a corner cut away. Some layouts have a wheel-arch notch.

You can cut foam to any of those shapes cleanly, because it is a continuous material. Cutting an innerspring unit means cutting through the coil structure and its edge support, which compromises exactly the parts doing the work. This is why almost every genuinely custom-shaped caravan mattress you will find is foam.

Density is what determines whether it lasts

Choosing foam is only half the decision. Low-density foam bottoms out under an adult within a couple of seasons of regular use, and no amount of gravel-road reasoning saves you from that.

The benchmark most caravan buying guides set is 30 to 40 kg/m3. We use 50 kg/m3 SABS-approved high-density foam in both the Revive Foam Caravan Mattress and the Active Foam Caravan Mattress, which is the same grade that goes into our home range. We publish the number rather than saying high density and leaving it there.

For most people we suggest the Revive first, because it adds an open-cell memory foam comfort layer over that core and solves the pressure complaints that bring people to us in the first place. The Active is the pick if you want a firmer, more traditional feel.

Looking after a mattress that lives on rough roads

  • Stop it sliding in transit. A mattress moving around on the base while you drive chafes the cover and rounds off the edges. A non-slip underlay or a fitted strap solves it.
  • Lift and air it regularly. Rough-road trips usually mean dusty, humid conditions. Standing the mattress on edge when you air the caravan out prevents the condensation mould that ends most caravan mattresses.
  • Never store it flat for months. Between trips, stand it up or take it out.
  • Use a breathable protector. Dust is unavoidable on gravel. A washable, breathable protector keeps it out of the foam without sealing moisture in.
