The short answer: most caravan overheating is the caravan, not the mattress. A caravan is a small, well-insulated box that absorbs sun all day and radiates it back at you all night, with two adults breathing inside it. The mattress contributes at the contact surface, where trapped body heat and moisture have nowhere to go. Fix the caravan first, then fix the surface. Anyone selling you a mattress as the solution to a 34 degree Limpopo night is overpromising.
Where the heat is actually coming from
Break it into four sources, because the fixes are completely different:
- Stored heat in the structure. The roof and walls absorb solar energy all afternoon and release it slowly after dark. This is why a caravan can be hotter inside at 9pm than the air outside.
- Trapped humid air. Two people breathing and perspiring in a sealed space raises humidity fast, and humid air makes a given temperature feel considerably worse because sweat evaporates less efficiently.
- Contact heat at the mattress surface. Your body warms the material touching it. If that material holds heat and moisture against you, the contact surface climbs above body temperature and you wake up.
- The bed location. Heat rises. A bed high in the caravan, or one directly under an uninsulated roof panel, sits in the hottest part of the space.
The caravan fixes, in order of effect
- Park in shade and orient sensibly. The single biggest lever, and free. Keeping the long side and the roof out of direct afternoon sun massively reduces how much heat the structure stores.
- Cross-ventilate before bed. Open a vent or window at each end for an hour after sunset to flush the hot stored air out and pull cooler outside air through. A closed caravan at bedtime is still holding the afternoon.
- Keep air moving over your skin. A small 12V fan does more for perceived comfort than almost any material change, because moving air accelerates evaporation from your skin. That is what makes you feel cooler.
- Awning or shade cloth over the roof. Stops solar gain reaching the panel above your head in the first place.
What the mattress can and cannot do
Now the honest part.
What it can do: the contact surface is the one part of the heat problem the mattress genuinely controls. Open-cell foam structures allow air and moisture vapour to move through the material rather than sealing it against your skin. A surface that lets perspiration escape feels significantly cooler than one that holds it, even at the same air temperature.
What it cannot do: no mattress cools the room. If the caravan interior is 32 degrees, you are sleeping in 32 degrees. Foam is an insulator by nature. Marketing that implies a mattress will make a hot caravan comfortable is not being straight with you.
There is a real trade-off worth knowing about with memory foam. Traditional memory foam conforms closely around your body, which is exactly why it relieves pressure so well, and that same close contact reduces airflow around you. Modern open-cell memory foam, which is what we use in the Revive Foam Caravan Mattress, is specifically structured to let air move through rather than trapping it, which addresses most of that historic complaint.
If you run genuinely hot and pressure relief is not your main concern, the Active Foam Caravan Mattress is the more sensible pick for you. It is a firmer build without a close-conforming memory foam layer, so you sit more on top of the surface than sunk into it, and less of your body is enclosed by material. Both use the same 50 kg/m3 SABS-approved high-density core.
| Fix | Real effect on sleeping hot | Cost |
|---|---|---|
| Park in shade, orient away from afternoon sun | Large. Prevents the heat being stored at all | Free |
| Cross-ventilate after sunset | Large. Flushes stored hot air | Free |
| Small 12V fan moving air over you | Large in perceived comfort | Low |
| Breathable natural-fibre bedding, no synthetic sheets | Moderate. Synthetics hold moisture against skin | Low |
| Open-cell foam surface that lets moisture escape | Moderate at the contact surface | Part of the mattress |
| Firmer build so you lie more on top than sunk in | Moderate for people who run hot | Part of the mattress |
Bedding is underrated
Polyester sheets are a common and easily fixed mistake. Synthetic fibres do not wick perspiration well, so moisture sits against your skin, and damp skin at 30 degrees feels considerably worse than dry skin at the same temperature. Cotton or linen sheets, and a light cotton blanket rather than a duvet, change the experience more than most people expect for the money.
The same logic applies to a waterproof mattress protector. They are genuinely useful in a caravan, but a fully sealed plastic-backed one is a vapour barrier laid directly between you and the mattress, which traps everything the foam was designed to let through. Choose a breathable one.
Frequently asked questions
Why is my caravan so hot at night?
The structure absorbs solar heat all day and radiates it back after dark, so the interior is often hotter than the outside air in the evening. Two people breathing in a sealed space also raise humidity quickly, which makes any given temperature feel worse. Shade during the day and cross-ventilation after sunset address both.
Does memory foam sleep hot in a caravan?
Traditional memory foam conforms closely and reduces airflow around your body, which is where the reputation comes from. Modern open-cell memory foam is structured to let air and moisture vapour move through it, which addresses most of that. If you run very hot, a firmer non-memory-foam build lets you lie more on top of the surface with less of your body enclosed.
What is the coolest mattress for a hot caravan?
Any honest answer starts with the caravan, not the mattress. No foam mattress cools a hot interior. What a mattress can do is avoid making it worse: an open-cell structure that lets perspiration escape, and a firmer surface that does not enclose your body. Shade, ventilation and a fan will each do more than a mattress change.
Do cooling gel toppers work in a caravan?
They can feel cool on first contact, because the gel conducts heat away from your skin faster than foam does. That effect fades once the material reaches your body temperature, usually within the first part of the night. They do not remove heat from the caravan. Airflow over your skin is more reliable.
