Side Sleepers in a Caravan: Why Your Shoulder Goes Numb at 3am

The short answer: side sleeping concentrates almost all of your body weight through two narrow contact points, the shoulder and the hip. A thin, low-density caravan slab cannot absorb that. The foam bottoms out under those two points, blood flow to the arm gets restricted, and you wake at 3am with a numb arm, a burning hip, and a stiff neck. Side sleepers need a surface that lets the shoulder and hip sink in while the waist stays supported.

The geometry problem nobody explains

Lie on your back and your weight spreads across your shoulders, ribcage, buttocks and calves. That is a large surface area, so the pressure at any one point is low.

Now roll onto your side. Your body is no longer a broad flat surface. It is a shape with two wide bony points, the shoulder girdle and the pelvis, and a narrow waist between them that does not touch the bed at all. Your whole mass is now routed through those two points.

Two things have to happen for that to be comfortable:

  • The shoulder and hip must be allowed to sink in. If the surface is too hard, they cannot, and all your weight presses into a small area of skin, muscle and blood vessels. That is the numb arm.
  • The waist must still be held up. If the surface is too soft or has collapsed, the heavy hip drops too far and your spine bends sideways into a curve for the whole night. That is the sore lower back and the stiff neck.

So a side sleeper needs a mattress that is simultaneously giving at the surface and firm underneath. Those two requirements sound contradictory, which is why cheap single-layer foam slabs never satisfy side sleepers.

Why it is worse in a caravan than at home

Most caravans are built with a foam slab in the 28 to 30 kg/m3 range, typically 75 to 100mm thick. The caravan builder chose it to keep weight and cost down, not to sleep a 75kg adult on their side for two weeks.

At 100mm of thickness, there is very little foam available to compress before you reach the bed base. A side sleeper's shoulder will use up all of it. Once the foam is fully compressed, you are effectively lying on plywood with a thin pad in between, and the pressure at the shoulder goes up sharply.

The test: lie on your side on your current caravan mattress and slide a flat hand under your waist. If there is a large gap, the mattress is too firm or too collapsed to support you. If you can feel the bed base through the foam at your hip, the foam has bottomed out.

What actually solves it

A layered build. An open-cell memory foam comfort layer contours around the shoulder and hip so the load spreads over a much larger area instead of concentrating on two points. Underneath, a genuinely high-density core, 50 kg/m3 in our case, stops the pelvis dropping and keeps the spine in line.

That is exactly what the Revive Foam Caravan Mattress is. It is the one we recommend first to side sleepers, and to anyone who tells us they wake up with a dead arm. The memory foam handles the pressure, the high-density core handles the support.

If you sleep on your side but strongly prefer a firmer, more responsive surface without memory foam contouring, the Active Foam Caravan Mattress uses the same 50 kg/m3 core in a medium-firm build. It is the better pick for combination sleepers who move between side and back through the night.

Symptom you wake up with What it usually means
Numb or dead arm, aching shoulder Surface is too firm or fully bottomed out. The shoulder cannot sink in, so pressure concentrates.
Sore hip, burning point of contact Same cause at the other contact point. Common on thin slabs under 100mm.
Stiff, aching lower back The core is too soft or collapsed. The hip is dropping and bending the spine sideways.
Stiff neck, turning all night Often a pillow-height mismatch on top of a mattress problem. Side sleepers need a taller pillow than back sleepers to fill the shoulder gap.

Pillow height matters more for side sleepers

Worth saying because it is cheap to fix and often half the problem. When you lie on your side, there is a gap between your head and the mattress roughly the width of your shoulder. Your pillow has to fill that gap exactly. Too flat and your head drops toward the mattress, bending your neck down. Too tall and your head is pushed up, bending it the other way.

Back sleepers need a much thinner pillow than side sleepers. If you share a caravan bed and one of you sleeps on their back and the other on their side, you genuinely need two different pillows. Getting the mattress right and the pillow wrong will still produce a stiff neck.

Fit and edges matter for side sleepers specifically

Side sleepers tend to sleep closer to the edge of the bed than back sleepers, particularly in a caravan where the bed is often against a wall on one side. If the mattress is even slightly undersized for the base, the unsupported edge will collapse under a shoulder and you will roll or sag.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best caravan mattress for side sleepers?

One with a pressure-relieving comfort layer over a high-density support core. Side sleepers need the shoulder and hip to sink in while the waist stays supported, which a single-layer foam slab cannot do. Our Revive Foam Caravan Mattress is built exactly this way and is what we recommend first for side sleeping.

Should a side sleeper choose a soft or firm caravan mattress?

Neither extreme. A very firm surface concentrates pressure on the shoulder and hip and causes numbness. A very soft one lets the hip drop and bends the spine. What you want is a soft-feeling surface over a firm, high-density core, which reads as medium in the hand but supports like something firmer.

Why does my arm go numb in the caravan but not at home?

Almost always because the caravan mattress is thinner and lower density than your home mattress. Most caravans ship with 28 to 30 kg/m3 foam around 75 to 100mm thick. Your shoulder compresses all of it, so the pressure at that contact point is far higher than at home, which restricts blood flow and causes the numbness.

Will a memory foam topper fix side-sleeping pain in a caravan?

It can help if the mattress underneath is still sound and simply too firm at the surface. It will not help if the core has already bottomed out, because the topper just compresses into the same hollow. Press the middle firmly with a flat hand: if you reach the bed base, replace the mattress rather than adding to it.
