What Actually Matters in a Frail Care Mattress (And What Does Not)

Mr Mattress waterproof wipe-down care mattress

Quick answer: a mattress in a frail care centre or old age home is occupied up to 24 hours a day and cleaned constantly. A fully welded, seamless waterproof cover and a high-density core are not optional extras, they are the entire spec.

Care managers who buy ordinary quilted mattresses for frail care beds replace them again and again. The stitched seams absorb fluid, the cover fails, and a mattress meant to last years lasts months. We built our frail care supply the other way around: the MM SteriShield cover is fully welded and seamless, so there is no stitching for fluid to wick through, wipe-down sanitizer-proof and anti-microbial treated.

What to check before buying:

  • Welded, not stitched, seams. Stitching is where fluid gets in.
  • Published core density. 50 kg/m3 supports continuous occupancy without sagging.
  • An honest boundary. A general care mattress is not a medical device; know the difference before you buy for high-risk residents.

Built for continuous occupancy

The MM DuraCore 50 core is a 50 kg/m3 SABS-approved high-density foam, specified for institutional use and rated to 140 kg. The reinforced MM EdgeLock perimeter keeps the edge firm for residents who sit on the bed edge during assisted transfers, one of the first failure points on cheap care mattresses. A flippable MM TwinSide build is available on request for beds that never stand empty.

Where the honesty matters most

This is a general ward and care mattress designed for pressure redistribution. It is not an alternating-pressure air system. For residents with advanced pressure injuries, we will say so directly on your quotation and point you to a medical pressure-care specialist, the same way our bed sores guide does for home buyers.

Frequently asked questions

What makes a mattress suitable for frail care?

A fully welded, seamless waterproof cover so fluid never reaches the foam, a high density core that supports continuous 24-hour occupancy, and a reinforced edge for assisted transfers. Our MM SteriShield cover and MM DuraCore 50 core cover all three.

Is a frail care mattress the same as an alternating-pressure system?

No, and we say so plainly. Our mattress is a general care mattress for pressure redistribution in everyday use. Residents with advanced pressure injuries need a dynamic alternating-pressure system from a medical device supplier.

Can old age homes get a formal quotation and 30-day account?

Yes. Approved facilities receive formal quotations, invoices, purchase-order processing and deposit-based or 30-day terms.
