The Founder

My name is Andries Taljaard. I build mattresses for a living.

I started Mr Mattress because I was tired of watching people pay double for a bed they could get for half the price, if only someone cut out the middleman. So we did.

We own the factory. We cut the foam. We stitch the covers. We load the truck. And we sell straight to you, with no distributor, no agent and no retail chain taking a slice on the way. That is the whole trick, and it has never changed.

Our head office and main factory are at 47 Piet Human Street in Bloemfontein, and we manufacture through our own and approved partner facilities in Gauteng, Cape Town and East London. Every bed we sell is made in South Africa by people I know by name.

This is a family business in the most literal sense. My wife Melanie handles the visual aesthetics and graphic design, and our three kids are growing up around the factory. When you buy from us, you are not buying from a faceless brand. You are buying from a family that sleeps on the same mattresses we sell you.

If I wouldn't let my own wife and kids sleep on it, I'm not selling it to you.

Why I built Mr Mattress this way

We sell direct, because the markup was the problem. Most mattress brands pass through three or four hands before they reach you: manufacturer, distributor, retailer, sales floor. Every hand takes a cut, and you pay for all of them. Making the bed ourselves and selling it straight to you is not a gimmick, it is just maths.

We publish the honest specs. The foam density of every model is on its product page, because density is what actually determines how a foam mattress supports you and how long it lasts. Our full range specifications are public, including the fact that our Hybrid Foam uses pocket springs under its comfort foam layer. If a spec matters to your sleep, you should be able to see it before you pay.

We give you 365 nights to be sure. A few minutes lying on a bed in a showroom tells you very little. A year in your own bedroom tells you everything, so that is what you get.

We put the warranty in writing. 3 years on Comfort Foam, and 10 years on Active Foam, Revive Foam and Hybrid Foam. No fine-print games.
