What Is a Hybrid Mattress? Coil + Foam Explained by the People Who Build One

Mr Mattress free nationwide delivery - best hybrid mattress South Africa

"Hybrid" is one of those mattress words that sounds technical but gets used to mean almost anything. Ask three different bed shops in South Africa what a hybrid mattress is and you'll hear three different answers - usually whichever one matches what's on their floor.

We build one. So here's the plain-language version of what a hybrid actually is, why the combination works, and what to check before buying any mattress with the word on the label.

A hybrid is two support systems doing two different jobs

A hybrid mattress pairs a steel coil core with foam comfort layers on top. Each component does what it's best at:

  • The coil core provides deep support, responsiveness and bounce - and an open chamber of air that breathes, which matters in a South African summer.
  • The foam layers provide the surface feel: pressure distribution, comfort and quiet.

That's the whole idea. Springs alone can feel harsh at the surface; foam alone gives up the bounce and some of the airflow. A hybrid takes the deep support of steel and the surface comfort of foam and stacks them. Our full foam vs spring vs hybrid comparison covers when each build wins.

The two things that make or break a hybrid

1. The foam on top of the coils. Here's the industry's quiet truth: the steel almost never fails first. When a coil mattress "dies," it's nearly always low-density comfort foam collapsing into the spring system, until you feel every coil through the surface. So the first question for any hybrid isn't about the springs at all - it's "what's the density of the foam above them?" If the seller can't answer, walk.

2. What kind of coils they actually are. "Hybrid" doesn't tell you the coil type. Ours is a Bonnell system - hourglass coils wired into one connected lattice, robust and uniform. Some hybrids use pocket springs - individually pocketed coils that isolate partner movement better, at a higher price. We explain the difference honestly in our pocket spring vs Bonnell guide - and to be clear, the Mr Mattress Hybrid is Bonnell, not pocket spring, and we'll never blur that.

Who a hybrid suits best

  • Hot sleepers - the open coil chamber moves air in a way solid foam can't.
  • Heavier sleepers - a steel core carries load with deep, durable support. It's why the Hybrid is our lead recommendation for heavier bodies.
  • People replacing an old inner-spring bed - familiar responsiveness, modern comfort layers. See our old spring vs modern hybrid comparison.
  • Anyone who finds pure foam "too still" - if you want a bed that pushes back when you move, coils do that.

The one we build - with a test result, not a slogan

The Mr Mattress Hybrid pairs a Bonnell steel coil core with high-density foam comfort layers built to the same published-density standard as our foam range - because that top layer is what actually determines lifespan. We also put it through EN 1957 endurance testing, the European standard that mechanically simulates years of nightly use, so the durability claim is a lab result, not a feeling.

Frequently asked questions

What is a hybrid mattress?

A mattress that pairs a steel coil core (deep support, bounce, airflow) with foam comfort layers on top (surface comfort and pressure distribution). Each material does the job it's best at.

Is a hybrid mattress good for hot sleepers and heavier bodies?

Yes - the open coil chamber breathes better than solid foam, and a steel core carries heavier loads with durable deep support. The Mr Mattress Hybrid is EN 1957 endurance tested and is our lead recommendation for heavier sleepers.

What sizes does the Mr Mattress Hybrid come in?

Double (from R4,999) and Queen (R5,399), with a 10-year written warranty and a 365-night home trial. We don't make a Single or Three-Quarter Hybrid - for those sizes, see the Mr Mattress Active Foam.
