Mattresses and Bed Sores: What a Standard Mattress Can and Can't Do

Mr Mattress free nationwide delivery - honest guide to mattresses and bed sores

If you're reading this, there's a fair chance you're caring for someone - a parent, a spouse, someone recovering from surgery or living with limited mobility - and you've typed "best mattress for bed sores" into Google hoping a better bed will help. Before any mattress company takes your money, you deserve the straight answer. I manufacture mattresses, and here it is: a standard mattress - mine included - is not a medical device, and it does not treat or prevent pressure ulcers.

This article exists to make sure you buy the right thing, even though the right thing may not be from us.

The honest answer first: this is a medical problem, not a mattress problem

Bed sores - pressure ulcers - develop when sustained pressure cuts off blood supply to skin and tissue, usually in someone who cannot regularly shift their own position. That is a medical situation. It's managed with repositioning schedules, skin care, clinical oversight - and, on the equipment side, purpose-built medical mattresses, most notably alternating-pressure (air-cell) mattresses that mechanically shift pressure points on a cycle. Those are medical devices, sold by medical and homecare suppliers, and often prescribed or recommended by a wound-care nurse, physiotherapist or doctor.

No foam mattress from any consumer bedding company - however good the foam - does what an alternating-pressure system does. Anyone who tells you otherwise is selling, not helping.

What to do if someone is at genuine risk

  • Speak to a healthcare professional first - a wound-care sister, physiotherapist, occupational therapist or GP. Pressure-ulcer risk is assessed, not guessed.
  • Ask about an alternating-pressure mattress or overlay from a medical or homecare supplier. These exist at a range of prices, including rental options, and they are built for exactly this job.
  • Ask about repositioning schedules and skin care - equipment supports the care plan; it doesn't replace it.
  • Do not rely on a consumer mattress - foam, memory foam, ours, anyone's - to prevent or treat pressure ulcers. It is not what these products are for.

Where a standard mattress honestly fits

There is one place a consumer mattress belongs in this conversation: general comfort for someone who is mobile. If the person you're shopping for can move and reposition themselves normally, and you simply want a surface that distributes weight comfortably and doesn't create pressure points at the shoulders and hips, then a contouring mattress is a fair everyday choice.

Ours is the Revive Memory Foam - breathable open-cell memory foam over a high-density core, from R4,899 with a 10-year written warranty and a 365-night home trial. We'll say it plainly one more time: the Revive is a comfortable mattress, not a treatment. It does not prevent or heal pressure ulcers, and we will never claim it does.

Frequently asked questions

Can a mattress prevent or treat bed sores?

A standard consumer mattress cannot - it is not a medical device. Genuine pressure-ulcer risk calls for a purpose-built alternating-pressure mattress or overlay from a medical supplier, alongside professional care such as repositioning and skin monitoring.

What mattress should I buy for someone who is bedridden?

Speak to a healthcare professional first, then a medical or homecare supplier about alternating-pressure (air-cell) systems - available to buy or rent. A consumer mattress, ours included, is not the right product for someone at real pressure-ulcer risk.

Is memory foam good for bed sores?

Memory foam distributes weight comfortably for mobile sleepers, which makes it a pleasant everyday mattress - but it does not treat or prevent pressure ulcers. For medical need, use medical equipment.
