Let's get the awkward part out of the way first: Mr Mattress does not make a pocket spring mattress. Our spring mattress, the Hybrid, uses a Bonnell coil core - connected coils, not individually pocketed ones - and you'll never catch us blurring that difference to make a sale.
So why is a factory that doesn't make pocket springs writing a pocket spring guide? Because after fifteen-plus years in this industry, I've watched the words "pocket spring" become one of the most abused labels in South African bedding - and someone who doesn't need your money on this purchase is exactly the right person to explain it.
What a pocket spring actually is (and isn't)
In a genuine pocket spring mattress, every coil is sewn into its own individual fabric pocket, so each spring compresses independently of its neighbours. That independence is the entire point: when your partner rolls over, their side of the bed moves and yours doesn't. That's called motion isolation, and it's the one thing pocket springs genuinely do better than anything else.
Compare that to a Bonnell system - hourglass coils wired together into one connected lattice that works as a unit. Bonnell gives you robust, uniform support and classic bounce at a lower price. Neither system is "better" outright. If partner-movement isolation is your top priority, pocket springs earn their premium. If you want durable, responsive, even support for less money, a well-built Bonnell does the job - and the steel in either system will outlast the foam sitting on top of it.

The label abuse problem
Here's why this guide exists. "Pocket spring" has become a premium-sounding sticker that gets applied to beds that don't deserve it - coil units with a token layer of pockets, connected systems marketed with pocket-spring language, and price tags justified by the phrase rather than the engineering. We've even had to audit our own older pages for loose use of the term, which tells you how easily it creeps in.
A genuine pocket spring system is more expensive to build than a Bonnell. If you see a "pocket spring" bed priced like a budget Bonnell, one of two things is true: it isn't really pocket springs, or the foam on top of the pockets is so cheap that the springs won't matter.
The honest pocket spring checklist
- Ask how the coils are constructed. "Are the coils individually pocketed, or connected?" A seller who can't answer clearly is selling a word, not a spring system.
- Ask the density of the foam above the springs. Springs almost never fail first - the comfort foam collapsing into the coils is what kills spring mattresses. No kg/m³ figure, no sale.
- Check the warranty covers sagging with a measurable depth - not just "the springs," which were never going to fail anyway.
- Insist on a real trial period. Motion isolation is something you test with a partner, over weeks, in your own bed - not in a showroom aisle.
