So let's take it seriously - seriously enough to ask what a 10-minute showroom lie-down can actually measure, what it can't, and why we built our whole business around a different kind of test. What a showroom test genuinely tells you
Let's be fair to the showroom first - a lie-down does measure some real things:
- First-touch feel: plush or firm, springy or contouring. You'll know in seconds which broad family you prefer.
- Height and edge feel: how easy the bed is to get in and out of, and how the edge holds when you sit on it.
- Obvious mismatches: if a mattress feels instantly wrong, ten minutes is plenty to rule it out.
That's genuinely useful. The problem is what happens next: buyers treat that first-touch check as if it predicts long-term comfort. It doesn't - and that's not opinion, it's the structure of the test.
What it cannot tell you - no matter how long you lie there
A showroom test happens fully clothed, mid-afternoon, on a bed warmed by a hundred other testers, with a salesperson in your peripheral vision. It cannot measure:
- Night-long temperature - whether the surface sleeps hot in January.
- Your back on waking - the only comfort verdict that actually matters, delivered at 6am, weeks in.
- Partner movement at 3am, on your bed base, in your room.
- Week four - when the surface novelty fades and the support layer becomes the whole story.
Sleep researchers and honest salespeople will tell you the same thing: short trials predict very little about long-term comfort. The showroom answers "which family of feel?" It cannot answer "is this my mattress?"

If you're in Johannesburg, Cape Town or Durban: we don't have a showroom near you, and we won't pretend otherwise. What we offer instead is the test the showroom can't run: a 365-night home trial on every mattress - your bed frame, your bedroom temperature, your pillow, your winter and your summer, with no minimum hold period. If the mattress is wrong, you find out the way that actually counts, and we take it back.
Every mattress backs that trial with a published spec, because a home trial plus a number beats a lie-down plus a label:
