What is a Sleeper Base? (And Why Every Small Bedroom Needs One)

Most people have never heard of a sleeper base before they need one. Then they discover it — and wonder how they managed without it. Here's the full picture.

What a Sleeper Base Actually Is

A sleeper base looks like a standard bed base from the outside. Same dimensions, same fabric, same headboard profile. But underneath the top mattress, there's a second sleeping surface that pulls out on a trundle mechanism.

You pull the drawer out from under the base, it rolls forward on wheels, and a second mattress unfolds to floor level. That gives you two sleeping surfaces in the floor space of one bed.

When the guest is gone, you roll the trundle back in. The room returns to normal.

Who This is For

The sleeper base is built for one situation: you need an extra sleeping surface but you don't have the space for a permanent second bed.

This applies to a lot of South African homes. A child's bedroom that also needs to host a cousin when family visits. A study or spare room that doubles as a guest room twice a year. A flat where you want guest capability without permanently sacrificing floor space.

If a blow-up mattress is your current solution, a sleeper base is the upgrade that makes sense.

How the Trundle Mechanism Works

The trundle sits on heavy-duty castors that roll smoothly on most floor surfaces — tiles, wood laminate, and carpet. The frame is solid pine or steel depending on the model.

You don't need to be strong to operate it. One person can pull the trundle out and set it up without any tools or assembly. The mattress folds flat when stored and unfolds quickly when needed.

The lower trundle mattress sits at a lower height than the main bed — it's floor-level sleeping. For kids and guests staying for a night or a few days, this is completely fine. It's not designed for permanent daily sleeping at floor height.

Size Compatibility

Our sleeper bases come in Single and Three Quarter sizes — the most practical options for guest sleeping in a smaller room. The trundle is typically one size smaller than the base itself, so a Three Quarter base will have a Single trundle underneath.

Pair it with a matching Mr Mattress foam mattress for the best result. Our foam compresses and rolls, which makes fitting the trundle mattress clean and simple.

What to Pair It With

For the main sleeping surface, use any of our standard mattresses. For the trundle, we recommend our Comfort Foam Mattress in the corresponding size — it's firm enough to sit flat in the trundle drawer without bunching, and it provides proper support for a guest sleeping for a few nights.
