Who buys this in the Eastern Cape
The Eastern Cape has two very different cab-and-a-half markets. Gqeberha and East London run the automotive and industrial fleets, where SuperCabs and Extended Cabs carry crew and the rear bench gets used every shift. Further out, through the Wild Coast and the Karoo farming districts, it is long gravel distances with family and farm staff riding behind the front seats. The coastal salt air is the other factor: a wipeable leather-look cover holds up where fabric and bare foam absorb damp and go musty.
Driving conditions in the Eastern Cape
The Eastern Cape runs from Wild Coast game and cattle farms to the industrial corridor around East London and Gqeberha, with long rural distances on the N2 and plenty of gravel road driving in between. Bakkies here do real farm and game-ranching work, not just school runs, and a rear cushion needs to survive corrugated roads and dust, not just look good in a showroom.
Mr Mattress mattresses are manufactured here in East London, so the Eastern Cape is a genuine regional production base for us. The rear seat cushion ships from the same national stock as every other province, with free delivery and the standard small fee only for the most extreme rural areas.
Where these bakkies work in the Eastern Cape
Gqeberha and Uitenhage have been South Africa's motor manufacturing heartland for decades, and bakkies doing parts and component logistics between assembly plants and suppliers are a daily fixture of that corridor. Move inland, and the terrain changes completely: the Karoo interior around Graaff-Reinet and Cradock is dry, semi-arid, and towns are genuinely far apart, so a bakkie doing farm or game-ranch work out there covers long distances on isolated roads with fewer places to stop.
Between the Wild Coast's cattle and subsistence farming areas, Addo's game-farming country, and the Karoo's long-distance isolation, Eastern Cape bakkies do some of the widest range of driving conditions of any province, from industrial estate tar to genuinely remote farm track.
Why buy from Mr Mattress
Hi, I'm Andries
From humble beginnings to thousands of happy sleepers, on beds, in load bins, and now in the cab too. The Club Cab Rear Seat Cushion is built on solid wood and cut from the same bed-grade foam as everything else we make, because the back of your bakkie shouldn't feel like a park bench.
No fake sales. Just problems solved.
Read my story →Why ours outlasts the rest
Most bakkie seat cushions on the market are a slab of cheap foam, or foam glued to a thin chipboard panel. They feel fine in week one. By month six they sag in the middle, the board cracks on a corrugated road, and the cover starts peeling.
We build ours the way we build mattresses. A solid wood base carries the weight so the foam only has to do the comfort work. On top of that sits high-density foam, the same grade that goes into our beds, wrapped in a hexagon-stitched leather-look cover that looks like it came out of the factory with your bakkie.

This is the question that matters most on a cab-and-a-half, and most listings quietly avoid it. So, plainly: the Mr Mattress Bakkie Back Seat Cushion is an upholstered comfort cushion. It is not a certified passenger seat, it has no seat-belt anchorages, and it does not come with seatbelts.
What it is built for: making the hard rear compartment of a Club Cab, Super Cab, Xtra Cab, King Cab, Space Cab or Extended Cab comfortable and presentable. Short trips, kids, workers moving between sites, dogs, and keeping gear and knees off bare metal.
If your goal is to carry passengers legally, you need a different product from a different trade. A rear passenger seat needs engineered mounting points and seat-belt anchorages meeting the South African standards for restraint anchorages (SANS 1430 is the one usually cited), and it should be fitted by an installer who can give you documentation that will stand up at a roadworthy inspection. No foam cushion, universal bench or upholstered pad - from anyone, including us - is a substitute for that. Firms that supply cab-and-a-half seats with SABS-approved belt kits do that work; we do not.
We would rather lose a sale than have somebody fit the wrong thing behind their front seats and assume it is safe to put a child on it with a lap belt that is not anchored to anything.
One thing worth knowing before you shop: most cab-and-a-half bakkies leave the factory with no rear seat belts and no belt anchorage points behind the front seats at all. That is exactly why a compliant rear seat is a specialist fitment rather than a bolt-in purchase - the anchorages usually have to be engineered in, not just bolted to existing points. Whoever you buy from, ask precisely what is being certified: the seat, the belts, the anchorages, or the installation. Those are four different things.
If your bakkie already has rear seat belts, say so when you order. Some cab-and-a-half models do have factory belts or anchorage points fitted behind the front seats. Where that is the case we cut the cushion with belt openings on request, at no extra cost, so your existing factory belts still feed through and buckle normally instead of being buried under upholstery. To be precise about what that does and does not mean: the restraint is your vehicle's own factory belt, anchored to the vehicle body by the manufacturer. Our cushion simply stops getting in its way. We are not adding belts, anchorages or certification, and if your bakkie has none fitted, a cushion cannot create them.
On SABS: our cushion is built from SABS-approved materials, which speaks to the quality and safety of the foam and the build. That is a materials standard and it is not the same thing as seat-belt or anchorage certification, which is a separate standard entirely. We would rather spell that out than let the letters do work they should not do.
Not sure which you need? We wrote a plain guide to the whole category - every cab-and-a-half naming convention, what the real options cost from about R950 to R4,000, and when you legally need a certified seat with belts: Club Cab Back Seat: What Fits, What It Costs, and What Is Actually Legal.
Frequently asked questions
Will it fit my bakkie in the Eastern Cape?
Yes. It is made for the rear compartment of cab-and-a-half bakkies: Toyota Hilux Xtra Cab, Ford Ranger SuperCab, Isuzu D-Max Extended Cab, Nissan Navara King Cab, Mazda BT-50 FreeStyle Cab, Mitsubishi Triton Club Cab and older models like the Colt Clubcab and Isuzu KB Space Cab. If your bakkie has jump seats or an open space behind the front seats, this cushion fits. Need a custom size? WhatsApp a measurement to 087 292 1957.
What makes it stronger than other rear seat cushions?
Most rear seat cushions are foam-only or built on thin chipboard that sags and cracks. Ours is built on a solid wood base, so it stays flat and firm under weight, trip after trip. The foam on top is high-density, the same grade we use in our mattresses.
What is the cover made of?
A durable leather-look upholstery with hexagon stitching. It feels like a premium factory seat, wipes clean with a damp cloth, and handles dust, dogs and work boots.
How does delivery work in the Eastern Cape?
Delivery is free anywhere in South Africa, with a small fee only for extreme rural areas. Free delivery reaches every corner of the Eastern Cape, including Gqeberha, East London, Mthatha, Kariega (Uitenhage), Jeffreys Bay, Makhanda (Grahamstown), Komani (Queenstown) and King William's Town. Orders ship within 2 to 3 working days to main centres and 5 to 7 working days to outlying areas.
Do I need to bolt it in?
No drilling or bolts needed. The cushion sits flat on the rear floor or jump-seat platform. Its weight and the snug fit keep it in place. You can lift it out in seconds when you need the space for cargo.
Can passengers sit on it?
It is an upholstered comfort cushion that makes the hard rear compartment comfortable for short trips, kids, workers between sites and pets. It is not a certified replacement seat and does not include seatbelts, so always follow your vehicle licensing rules for carrying passengers.
How much does it cost?
R2,499, down from R3,999. One size, one price, with free delivery across the Eastern Cape and a 365-night trial. Pay in full or split it over 2 to 6 interest-free instalments with Stitch.
Can I order a custom size?
Yes. If your bakkie or panel van needs a different length, width or thickness, WhatsApp us on 087 292 1957 with your measurements and we will quote you on a custom-cut cushion with the same solid wood base and leather-look cover.
Which bakkies use this rear seat cushion?
This cushion is made for every cab-and-a-half bakkie sold in South Africa, whatever the badge calls it. Toyota calls it the Hilux Xtra Cab. Ford calls it the Ranger SuperCab. Isuzu calls it the D-Max Extended Cab (and older Isuzu KB models were sold as the Space Cab). Nissan calls it the Navara King Cab, and before that the Hardbody King Cab. Mazda calls it the BT-50 FreeStyle Cab. Mitsubishi calls it the Triton Club Cab, and many South Africans still remember the Colt Clubcab. Whether you say club cab, super cab, extra cab, king cab, space cab, extended cab, half cab, 1.5 cab or cab-and-a-half, it is the same body style: a bakkie with a stretched cab and a space behind the front seats. That space is exactly what this cushion is built for, and we deliver it free across the Eastern Cape.
