Sloom vs Mr Mattress: Honest Foam Mattress Comparison (2026)

Two tabs open, one bed to buy

You are comparing mattresses late at night, on your phone, because your back is sore and your current bed is finished.

You have probably landed on Sloom. Good brand. We are not going to pretend otherwise. But before you spend the money, here is the honest version of how Sloom and Mr Mattress line up. Both, side by side. Where Sloom is better, we say so. Then you make your own call.

That is the whole point. You should buy the right bed, not the one with the loudest ad.

The short version

Sloom is the modular one. You unzip the cover and rearrange the foam layers yourself to change the firmness. Soft, medium, firm. You decide, at home, by moving the foam around.

Mr Mattress is the simple one. No layers to rearrange. No decision to get wrong. We build the support in, you sleep on it, your back settles. That is it.

Both are foam. Both are made in South Africa. Both ship to your door free. The difference is who does the work to get it right. With Sloom, that is you. With us, that is us.

Where Sloom genuinely wins

We said we would be honest, so here it is.

If you and your partner cannot agree on firmness, Sloom's split comfort lets each side be set differently. That is a real feature, and for some couples it is the one that decides it. If you actually enjoy adjusting your bed every few months, the modular design is built for that.

If that is you, Sloom is a fair choice. We mean it.

Where Mr Mattress wins

For most people, the modular thing is a job they never asked for. You do not want to learn your mattress. You want to sleep.

We give you a bed that is right the moment it arrives. Better sleep, less back pain, no homework. You get more than three times longer to decide it is yours, with a bigger warranty behind it, and none of the return-fee fine print.

Here is something Sloom cannot offer at all. You can come feel a Mr Mattress in person, in one of our stores across South Africa, before you commit. Sloom has no stores, by their own admission. With us you get a choice: try it in store, or order online with 365 nights to be sure. Sloom only gives you the online option, with strings attached after night 60.

Then there is the money. A Sloom queen is R12,000, going up from 1 July 2026. Our foam mattress queen starts at R5,199. Our memory foam queen starts at R7,199. We make our own mattresses, so you get more bed for less, without the middleman markup. That gap is real.

Simple is not the cheap option. Simple is the confident one. We do not need you to adjust anything, because we got it right the first time.

So which one

If you want a project, buy the modular bed.

If you want to wake up without the lower-back ache and never think about your mattress again, that is us. 365 nights to be sure. 10-year warranty. Free delivery. Made in South Africa.

Frequently asked questions

Is Mr Mattress cheaper than Sloom?

Yes, significantly. A Sloom queen costs R12,000, with a price increase from 1 July 2026. The Mr Mattress foam mattress queen starts at R5,199 and the memory foam queen at R7,199. We manufacture our own mattresses, which is why you pay less without getting less.

Can I try a Mr Mattress before I commit?

Two ways. Come into one of our stores across South Africa and feel it in person. Or order online and use the 365-night comfort guarantee. That is more than three times longer than Sloom's 100-night trial, which also requires you to keep the mattress at least 60 nights before returning.

Does Sloom charge a fee if you return their mattress?

Yes. Sloom charges a 10% service fee if you return before 60 days, and a 10% fee on size exchanges. Their free full refund only applies between day 60 and day 100. With Mr Mattress, you get 365 nights with an exchange or store credit on comfort, and a full refund if the mattress is defective.

Is foam better than spring for back pain?

Foam supports your spine evenly rather than pushing back at pressure points like old springs do. For most people with lower-back pain, that is the difference between waking up sore and waking up fine. Mr Mattress uses 30 kg/m3 high-density SABS-approved foam.

Do I have to adjust a Mr Mattress like a Sloom?

No. There are no layers to rearrange. The support is built in. You sleep on it exactly as it arrives, from night one.

Is there a weight limit on Mr Mattress?

Sloom publishes a 150kg per person limit. Mr Mattress does not publish a per-person weight limit. Contact us directly if you have a specific requirement and we will advise the right model.

Can I try a Mr Mattress in a store?

Yes. We have stores across South Africa with more opening, where you can feel the mattress before buying. Sloom has no showrooms at all. So you get a choice Sloom cannot give you: try it in person, or order online with 365 nights comfort guarantee.

Is Mr Mattress made in South Africa?

Yes. We manufacture in Gauteng, Cape Town, East London and Bloemfontein, and deliver free to your door nationwide. Our foam is SABS-approved, 30 kg/m3 high-density, and we publish our specs so you know exactly what you are buying.
