Every statistic on this page is attributed to a named public source, so you can check it yourself: the Sloom 2025 National Sleep Census (a survey of 5,602 South Africans across all nine provinces, run by the South African mattress retailer Sloom and widely reported in local media), the South Africa Mattress Market report by international research firm IMARC Group, and Census 2022 from Statistics South Africa. How South Africa sleeps: the 2025 National Sleep Census

The Sloom 2025 National Sleep Census surveyed 5,602 people across all nine provinces and produced the country's first composite sleep quality benchmark. The headline findings:

• The national sleep quality score is 54 out of 100. South Africans are getting the hours but not the recovery.
• 57.6% of respondents sleep the recommended 7 to 9 hours, yet only 15.1% wake up feeling genuinely refreshed.
• 49.8% say stress keeps them awake at night, making stress the biggest single sleep disruptor the census identified.
• 55.8% cite physical discomfort as a factor that disturbs their sleep.
• Mattress age showed a measurable gap: respondents on a mattress less than a year old averaged 60.5 out of 100, while those on a mattress of 20 years or older averaged 48.1. That is a difference of more than 12 points on a 100 point scale.
• The 46 to 55 age group scored lowest, averaging 52.4, which the census links to career and financial stress in those years.
• Habits matter: people who actively prioritise sleep scored 15.7 points higher than those who do not, and regular exercisers scored 8.5 points higher.

Provincial differences were small. Gauteng averaged 54.7, KwaZulu-Natal 53.4 and the Western Cape 53.1, all close to the national average. In other words, where you live matters far less than how you live and what you sleep on.

The census also asked what drives mattress buying decisions: 86.7% of respondents named comfort as a priority, 59.7% named price, and only 37.6% said warranty or trial terms influence their choice. That last number is worth pausing on, because a trial period is the only way to test a mattress against the census's own biggest finding: how you actually sleep on it at home.

The South African mattress market in numbers

According to IMARC Group's South Africa Mattress Market report:

• The market is valued at around USD 309 million in 2025 and is projected to reach roughly USD 577 million by 2034, a growth rate of 7.17% a year.
• Queen is the most popular mattress size, holding about 30% of the market in 2025, the largest single share of any size.
• Innerspring mattresses lead the product segments at about 31%, with foam, memory foam and hybrid designs making up much of the rest.
• About 65% of mattress sales still happen offline in physical stores, though online buying is growing.
• Around 74% of demand is domestic, from households rather than hotels and guesthouses.

One honest caveat: market sizing is modelling, not counting, and different research firms publish different estimates for the same market. Read any single market size figure, including this one, as an informed estimate rather than an exact number.
