The Bed Shop vs Mr Mattress: Honest Comparison (2026)

Last checked: 26 July 2026

Short answer: The Bed Shop is South Africa's largest independent bed retailer, 100+ stores, selling its own Dynamic Bedding-manufactured ranges. Mr Mattress is a smaller direct manufacturer. The Bed Shop's own site doesn't mention a home trial anywhere, and delivery isn't free (R350 within 20km of a store). Mr Mattress gives you 365 nights and free delivery nationwide as standard, on the Revive memory foam and every other model.

Verdict

Verdict: Mr Mattress wins on trial and delivery; The Bed Shop wins on physical footprint and range depth. With 100+ stores, The Bed Shop is genuinely the biggest independent bed retailer in the country. But nothing on their own site promises a home trial, and delivery costs extra even close to a store. Mr Mattress builds a 365-night trial and free nationwide delivery into every sale, including the Revive memory foam.

What each of us actually is

The Bed Shop is a division of Dynamic Bedding (Pty) Ltd, a South African manufacturer that builds beds exclusively for its own 100+ stores across South Africa, Namibia and Zambia. Its range runs from budget (ComfoSleep, Bonnell coil) through Orthopaedic Elemental (foam over Bonnell coil) and Posture Pocket Elemental (pocket spring) to Therapaedic Elemental, a genuine no-springs foam mattress. Sealy is also stocked as a third-party name.

Mr Mattress is a smaller manufacturer. We make our own foam and memory foam mattresses in South Africa, plus one Bonnell coil-and-foam Hybrid, and sell direct online and through our own stores at one fixed price.

The trial you won't find

Across The Bed Shop's own FAQ and product pages, there's no mention of a home comfort trial or satisfaction guarantee - only a standard manufacturing warranty, claimed with your original invoice. Delivery within 20km of a store costs R350; further afield isn't specified without contacting a store directly.

Mr Mattress gives you 365 nights at home on every model, with no minimum hold period, and free delivery nationwide as standard - no distance-based fee.

Where The Bed Shop genuinely wins

Store network. 100+ stores across South Africa, Namibia and Zambia - genuinely the largest independent footprint of any name on this page.

Range depth. Multiple support systems in one place - Bonnell, pocket spring and pure foam - if you want to feel the difference in person.

A recognised third-party name. Sealy is stocked alongside their own house brands, if brand familiarity matters to you.

Where Mr Mattress wins

The trial, spelled out. 365 nights, no minimum hold, published clearly - not absent from the policy pages entirely.

Free delivery, no distance fee. Nationwide, at no extra cost, regardless of how far you are from a store.

Published construction. The Revive's memory foam construction and every spec on the Hybrid's coil core are public. The Bed Shop's product pages describe feel and weight capacity, not underlying material specs.

One throat to choke. Any claim goes straight to the people who built the bed.

If back pain or firm support is what brought you here

The Bed Shop's "Orthopaedic Elemental" name targets exactly the search a lot of back-pain buyers run. Worth knowing: it's a foam-over-Bonnell-coil construction, not a specific medical product - "orthopaedic" is a marketing term across this entire industry, not a certified category. Our own Active Foam is built the same way many buyers actually mean when they search "orthopaedic": a firm, high-density foam core for spinal alignment, with the density published rather than implied by a product name. If you specifically want pressure relief and contouring for back pain in a side-sleeper-friendly foam, the Revive memory foam is the better match - it's built for exactly that.

Frequently asked questions

Does The Bed Shop offer a home trial?

Not that's published anywhere on their own site - their FAQ and policy pages cover warranty claims but make no mention of a comfort trial or satisfaction guarantee. Mr Mattress gives every model, including the Revive, a 365-night trial with no minimum hold.

Is delivery free from The Bed Shop?

No - delivery within 20km of a store costs R350, with pricing further out depending on the store. Mr Mattress delivers free nationwide on every order.

What is The Bed Shop's Therapaedic range?

Therapaedic Elemental is a triple-layered rebond foam mattress with no springs, rated to 110kg per side. Construction details and pricing aren't published online in the same depth as Mr Mattress's Revive memory foam, which publishes its build and sells for a fixed R4,899.

Is "orthopaedic" a real medical mattress category?

No - "orthopaedic" is an unregulated marketing term used across the whole industry, including by The Bed Shop's own "Orthopaedic Elemental" range. It generally signals a firmer, supportive foam-over-coil or high-density foam build. Our Active Foam mattress is built for the same firm-support need, with its foam density published rather than implied by the product name.

Does Mr Mattress sell a spring mattress like The Bed Shop's Posture Pocket range?

Not a pocket spring, no. Our Hybrid uses a Bonnell steel coil core (2.4mm wire, 82B high-carbon steel, fully oven-tempered, 5.5mm border wire clipped at every coil) under a thick foam comfort layer, tested to EN 1957 with 96% height retention after the equivalent of 8-12 years of use - the full spec published, not held back.
