The short answer: if you lift your caravan mattress and find black or grey spotting on the underside, that is condensation mould, and it is not a defect in the mattress. Warm, moist air from your body meets the cold, sealed surface of the bed base underneath you, condenses into liquid water with nowhere to escape, and mould grows in the damp. It is extremely common on the KwaZulu-Natal coast and anywhere humid. It is also almost entirely preventable.
Why the underside and not the top
A sleeping adult loses a meaningful amount of moisture every night through breathing and perspiration. That water vapour moves downward and outward through the bedding and the mattress.
On the top surface it evaporates into the room. On the bottom surface it hits the bed base, which in most caravans is a sealed sheet of plywood or a solid moulded panel, often sitting over an unheated storage void. That panel is colder than the mattress. Warm moist air touching a cold surface condenses, exactly like a cold drink sweating on a summer day.
The water then sits trapped between the mattress and the base, in the dark, with no airflow. That is close to ideal conditions for mould.
Two things make it dramatically worse in coastal South Africa: high ambient humidity means the air already carries a lot of moisture, and caravans are frequently closed up and stored for weeks between trips with the mattress lying flat on the base the entire time.
Five things that actually reduce it
- Get air under the mattress. This is the single most effective fix. A slatted base, or a purpose-made ventilating underlay membrane between mattress and base, breaks the sealed contact and lets moisture escape instead of condensing. If your caravan has a solid panel base, drilling a pattern of ventilation holes is a common owner modification, though check with your caravan dealer before cutting into a structural panel.
- Lift and turn it regularly. On a trip, stand the mattress up against the wall for an hour when you air the caravan out. It costs nothing.
- Never store the caravan with the mattress flat. Between trips, stand the mattress on edge, or lift it off the base entirely. Most coastal mould happens during storage, not during use.
- Ventilate while you sleep. A closed caravan with two people breathing in it all night becomes very humid. A roof vent cracked open moves the moisture out.
- Deal with leaks first. If a window seal or roof vent is leaking, no amount of mattress management will help. Damp coming in from outside is a caravan repair, not a mattress problem.
Does foam type make a difference?
Some. It is worth being straight about what it does and does not do.
Open-cell foam structures allow air and moisture vapour to move through the material rather than trapping it at a barrier. A denser, better-made foam also holds its structure so it does not develop compressed hollows where moisture pools. What no foam does is make condensation disappear. If you seal any mattress against a cold solid panel in humid air with no airflow, moisture will collect underneath it. Any supplier who tells you their foam is mould-proof in that situation is overselling. The fix is airflow. The mattress choice affects how well it copes and how long it lasts, not whether physics applies.

A note on cleaning
Surface mould on a mattress cover can often be cleaned and thoroughly dried. Mould that has grown into the foam itself is a different matter, because open-cell foam has enormous internal surface area that you cannot reach, and soaking foam in cleaning solution introduces more moisture into the exact material you are trying to dry out. If it smells musty after it has been fully dried and aired, the mould is inside it.
If anyone in the caravan has asthma or a respiratory condition, do not persist with a mattress that has established internal mould.

Is foam or spring better for a damp coastal caravan?
Foam, on balance. Innerspring units add steel components in a salt-air, high-humidity environment, and a sprung caravan mattress is also significantly heavier to lift and turn, which matters when regular lifting is the main thing preventing mould. High-density foam is lighter to manage and has no metal to corrode.
