Bonnell vs pocket springs: the two systems
- Bonnell (connected coil): hourglass-shaped steel coils wired together into one lattice. The whole system works as a unit - strong, durable, responsive, and cost-effective. This is the classic, proven spring feel.
- Pocket springs: individual coils, each sewn into its own fabric pocket, moving independently. Better motion isolation between partners, at a higher price - and, frankly, with more that can go wrong in cheap versions where "pocket spring" is a label rather than an engineered system.
Neither system is "better" outright. Bonnell gives you robust, uniform support and bounce for less money; pocket springs buy you partner-movement isolation. What ruins either one is the same thing that ruins foam mattresses: low-density comfort layers on top that collapse long before the steel does.

The part nobody checks: what's on top of the springs
Springs almost never fail first. The steel in a decent coil system outlasts everything around it. What fails is the comfort layer - the foam between you and the coils. When a spring mattress "goes," it's nearly always that foam collapsing into the coil system, and suddenly you can feel every spring through the surface.
So when you buy any spring mattress in South Africa, the question isn't just "what springs?" - it's "what density is the foam on top of the springs?" If the seller can't answer, the springs don't matter.
