The 168cm rule, told straight
A bed is outgrown once the head or feet come within 10cm of the ends. Usable sleeping height is a bed's length minus 20cm.
Three Quarter gives more room to sprawl. It does not give more length. If your teenager is already taller than about 168cm, the honest fix is length, not width.
