What Mattress for a 2 Year Old? The South African Answer
Quick answer. At two, go firm and go straight to a standard single, 92 x 188cm, unless the frame you already own is a 140 x 70 cot bed. Why firm, at this age
A two year old weighs 11 to 14kg. That is not enough to compress a soft mattress into any kind of support, so they sink into a hollow and sleep in a curve. A firm surface keeps them flat. It is also the surface that is still flat in three years, which matters more than it sounds when you are buying once.
Firm is not a marketing word, it is a number
Shops say firm because it sells. The number that actually decides whether a mattress holds a child or collapses under them is foam density, measured in kilograms per cubic metre.

The hand test, if you are shopping anywhere else. Press your hand flat into the mattress. If the hand shape is still there more than a second after you lift it, it is too soft for a child under three. It is a crude test and it works.
Size: skip the toddler bed if you can
South African shops sell a cot size mattress at 140 x 70cm, or 132 x 66cm for the older cot beds, usually at R650 to R750 for a thin low density pad. It fits the frame you already own and it will be outgrown before it wears out.
A standard single at 92 x 188cm costs more once and then never again. Ten years of use puts a R3,399 Single under R30 a month. If the room takes a single, buy the single.

If it is going on the floor or in a low frame
A two year old is exactly the age a Montessori floor bed is meant for. The full guide is here: Montessori floor bed mattress, South Africa. Two things to know before you buy:
- Keep it thin enough that the frame rail still stands proud of the mattress, or the rail is doing nothing.
- Let it breathe. A mattress flat on a tiled floor in a humid room can grow mould underneath within two to four weeks. Use a slatted frame, or stand it up against a wall for an hour once a week.
The age rule, said plainly. A mattress on or near the floor is for a child of 12 months and older.
Under 12 months the American Academy of Pediatrics, Red Nose and the Lullaby Trust all say the same thing: a cot, a bassinet or a play yard, and nothing else. Some Montessori writers suggest a floor bed from crawling, at about 9 months. We follow the safe sleep bodies, not the furniture trend, so we will not sell you a floor mattress for a baby under one. Between 12 and 18 months it can work, but only in a properly child proofed room, and speak to your clinic sister or paediatrician first.
The cover, honestly
The cover is quilted and it is not removable. You cannot unzip it and put it in the machine. It is washable in place: spot clean with warm water and a mild soap, then let it dry fully before you make the bed. We would rather tell you that now than have you find out on the first accident.

Questions parents ask us
Can a 2 year old sleep on a memory foam mattress?
Yes, but we would still point you at the firmer foam at this age. Memory foam is built to let you sink in, and a small child does not need that. Our Active Foam at 50 density holds them on top of the mattress rather than in it.

Do I need a waterproof cover?
At two, yes, get a mattress protector. Our cover is washable but it does not unzip, so a protector on top is the sensible layer between a toddler and the mattress.
