Firm is a number, not a word
A two year old weighs 11 to 14kg, not enough to compress a soft mattress into support, so they sleep in a curve. Firm density keeps them flat, and stays flat in three years too. The number that decides is foam density, in kilograms per cubic metre.

The age rule, said plainly
A mattress on or near the floor is for a child of 12 months and older. Never market a floor mattress under 12 months.
Under 12 months the American Academy of Pediatrics, Red Nose and the Lullaby Trust all say the same thing: a cot, a bassinet or a play yard, and nothing else. Between 12 and 18 months it can work, only in a child proofed room, and speak to your clinic sister or paediatrician first.
The cover is not removable, but washable in place: spot clean with warm water and mild soap, dry fully before making the bed.
