Is Your Mattress Too Firm or Too Soft? The Self-Test Guide
Too firm shows up at your pressure points: sore shoulders and hips, numb arms, and a gap under your lower back when lying flat. Too soft shows up as sagging: a hammock feeling, difficulty rolling over, and a stiff lower back on waking. Run the four checks below tonight to tell which side you are on.

Most people live for years on a mattress that is quietly wrong for them, because the signals arrive one bad morning at a time and never announce their cause. This is the practical companion to our mattress firmness guide: not what to buy, but how to diagnose the bed you already own.
Signs your mattress is too firm
Pressure soreness at the shoulder or hip. If the outside of your shoulder or hip aches in the morning, or you find yourself shifting off a sore point during the night, the surface is not letting your widest points settle in.
Numb arms and pins and needles. Waking with a dead arm now and then happens to everyone; waking with one regularly suggests sustained pressure that a more giving surface would spread out.
A gap under your lower back. Lie flat on your back and slide a hand under your lumbar curve. If your hand slips through easily into open space, the surface is bridging you: it is holding up your shoulders and pelvis but not meeting your lower back.
You sleep better on softer beds elsewhere. If guesthouse and holiday beds consistently give you better nights, note what they have in common. One good night away proves nothing; a pattern is data.
Signs your mattress is too soft
The hammock feeling. You sense yourself rolling toward the middle of the bed, or toward your partner, without meaning to. That is the surface failing under your heaviest points.
Rolling over takes effort. On a supportive surface, changing position is effortless. If you have to climb out of a body-shaped hollow to turn over, the mattress has lost the resistance that should be doing that work for you.
Lower back stiffness that eases once you are up. A spine that spends the night in a sag wakes up unhappy and loosens within an hour of moving. If your mornings follow that pattern, look at the bed before you blame your age. Our guide to waking up with back pain goes deeper on these signals.
A visible body impression. Strip the bed and look across the surface in low light. A permanent hollow deeper than about 2 to 3 cm means the foam has compressed for good; no firmness advice fixes a structurally finished mattress. Our article on how long a foam mattress lasts explains what to look for.
Four checks you can run tonight
1. The lumbar hand check. Lie on your back, relax, slide a flat hand under your lower back. Effortless open space: too firm for you. Hand pinned flat with no room at all: likely too soft, with your hips sunk below your shoulders. Gentle contact with light resistance is what you want.
2. The spine-line check. Lie on your side while someone photographs your back. The spine should run in one straight line from neck to tailbone. Bowing upward means the surface is too firm for your weight; sagging downward means too soft.
3. The roll test. Roll from your back to each side a few times. You should move on top of the mattress, not out of a hole in it.
4. The elimination check. Put the mattress on the floor for two nights. If the hammock feeling disappears, your base, not your mattress, may be the failed component. A sagging or broken base makes any mattress test soft; our base guide and the beds for sale in South Africa page cover complete set options.
What to do with your diagnosis
If the bed is too firm, remember that firmness is support and hardness is feel, two different things we untangle in firm vs hard mattress; the fix is a more contouring surface, not less support. Side sleepers and lighter bodies leaning softer should read our soft mattress guide before buying. If the bed is too soft and the impression check failed, the mattress is at the end of its life, whatever its label says. And if you are replacing it, buy in a way that lets your own back give the verdict: every Mr Mattress bed comes with a 365 night home trial, so the diagnosis you make at home is one you can act on at home too.
Frequently asked questions
How do I know if my mattress is too firm?
The signals cluster at your pressure points: sore shoulders or hips in the morning, regularly waking with a numb arm, and a clear gap under your lower back when you lie flat. If a hand slides effortlessly under your lumbar curve, the surface is not contouring to your body.
How do I know if my mattress is too soft?
You feel a hammock effect: rolling toward the middle, effort needed to change position, and a stiff lower back that eases soon after getting up. A permanent body impression deeper than about 2 to 3 cm confirms the foam has compressed and the mattress needs replacing rather than adjusting.
Can a mattress topper fix a mattress that is too firm?
Sometimes, temporarily. A topper adds surface give, which can ease pressure points on a structurally sound but hard-feeling mattress. It cannot add support, so it does nothing for a sagging or hollowed mattress, and a thick topper on a soft bed usually makes the hammock effect worse.
Could my base be the problem instead of my mattress?
Yes. A sagging, broken or unsupportive base makes any mattress behave as if it were too soft. Test by putting the mattress on the floor for two nights: if the sag feeling disappears, replace or repair the base first. Matching base and mattress sizes matters too.
How long should I test a new firmness before judging it?
Give it at least three to four weeks. Your body needs time to stop bracing for the old surface, and new foam settles slightly in its first weeks. That is why a showroom minute misleads, and why the 365 night home trial exists: real verdicts take real weeks of sleep.
