Caravanning in the Free State

Cold is the local variable people underestimate. On a winter night in the eastern Free State a thin, hollowed-out foam slab lets cold move straight up through the bed base. Free State winter nights: the cold comes from underneath
Free State and Highveld caravanning in winter has a specific problem. You pile on blankets and you are still cold, because the heat you are losing is going downward, not upward. Your body weight squashes the foam beneath you flat, and compressed material has almost no trapped air left in it. Below that is a bed base sitting over an unheated storage void that is close to outside temperature. On a night near freezing, that panel pulls heat straight out of you.

The tell is simple: if your chest and shoulders are warm but your hips, lower back and legs are cold, and another duvet changes nothing, it is downward conduction. One warning worth heeding on a cold night: do not seal the caravan up tight to stay warm. That drives interior humidity up sharply and the moisture condenses under your mattress. Bloemfontein has four: 20 Kolbe Avenue, 134 Charlotte Maxeke Street in Bloem Plaza, 47 Piet Human Street in Hamilton, and Loch Logan Waterfront. There is also a store in Welkom on the corner of Long and Toronto Road, and one in Kroonstad on Smaldeel Road. All are open Monday to Friday 08:00 to 17:00 and Saturday 08:00 to 13:00.

How thick should a caravan mattress be?
Most caravan buying guides recommend 75 to 100mm so the mattress clears cupboards and windows, but the right depth depends on your caravan. Tell us your available clearance when you order and we confirm the depth before it ships. WhatsApp 087 292 1957 with your measurement.
Why am I cold from underneath in my caravan?
Because your body weight compresses the material beneath you, and compressed material holds far less trapped air, which is what insulation actually is. The bed base often sits over an unheated storage void near outside temperature, so heat conducts downward far faster than it escapes upward through bedding.
Will more blankets fix a cold caravan bed?
Only partly. Blankets trap air above you and do help, but they do nothing about heat conducting downward through a compressed mattress into a cold base. If your chest is warm and your hips and legs are cold, add insulation below you instead.
