Bakkie Mattress Cape Town: Pre-Measured & Ready to Ship

Cape Town and the wider Western Cape buy differently to the rest of the country. Trips here are shorter, wetter and windier, and the cover matters at least as much as the foam - which is why we publish the specification of both instead of asking you to phone for a quote.

Built to fit your load bin exactly, wheel-arch notches and all. No custom order, no waiting weeks for a cut, no guessing on price. Delivered free anywhere in Cape Town.

The three fits our customers buy most. Every model and cab type we cover is already measured and on file.

Not sure which cab type you've got? Tell us your bakkie's make and model in the order note at checkout, or WhatsApp us and we'll confirm before it ships.

The three shapes we make

Each cab type has its own bin shape, wheel-arch notches pre-cut. This is exactly what arrives at your door in Cape Town.

Which bakkies it fits in Cape Town

The three cab shapes above cover the load-bin shape used across virtually every full-size bakkie sold in South Africa. Find yours below.

Make Models covered
Toyota Hilux (Raider, Legend, Raider X, Xtra Cab), Land Cruiser 79
Ford Ranger (XL, XLT, Wildtrak, Raptor)
Isuzu D-Max, KB series
Nissan Navara, NP300 Hardbody
Volkswagen Amarok (single, extended and double cab)
GWM P-Series, Steed 5
Mahindra Pik Up (single and double cab)
Mitsubishi Triton
Mazda BT-50
Others JAC T-Series, Peugeot Landtrek and most other full-size bakkies on South African roads
Driving a half-ton bakkie? Nissan NP200, Ford Bantam and Chevrolet Corsa Utility have a much smaller bin than a full-size single cab, so they need a true custom cut rather than a stock cab shape. Get a custom-cut quote here and we'll cut to your measurements instead.

Made and delivered in Cape Town

Made at our Cape Town facility, so Cape Town orders ship locally rather than being trucked in. Cape Town bakkie owners use these most for Karoo, West Coast and Garden Route trips, plus dog walks on the beach where a wipeable, tough canvas surface earns its keep fast.

Free delivery reaches every corner of Cape Town, including Cape Town CBD, Bellville, Durbanville, Milnerton, Table View, Brackenfell, Kuils River, Somerset West, Stellenbosch and Paarl. Most orders are used for Karoo, West Coast and Garden Route trips, under a canopy or open-bin with the tailgate down.

How Mr Mattress compares

In Cape Town the usual choice is between a local fitment centre that can collect-and-fit for you, or a foam supplier who will cut a slab but leave the cover and stitching up to you. Mr Mattress skips both compromises: a complete, pre-measured mattress with wheel-arch notches already cut, wrapped in a weatherproof canvas cover, delivered free anywhere in the city. No local branch to visit means nothing here, because a 365-night trial and 10-year warranty let you test the fit at home for a full year, longer than any in-store return policy in the city offers.

Sleeping in a bakkie in a winter-rainfall province

The Western Cape is the one province in South Africa that gets its rain in winter, and that single fact changes what a bakkie mattress has to survive. Everywhere else, you plan around dry winters. Here, a June or July trip means the cover has to deal with real, sustained wet, driving rain on the N7, a wet tarp, damp getting into the bin overnight. The weatherproof zip-off canvas cover is not a nice-to-have in this province, it is the reason the mattress lasts.

Wind is the second Cape factor. The West Coast and the Cederberg get exposed, sustained wind that flat-out beats a rooftop tent around, and a lot of Cape owners end up sleeping in the bin with the canopy closed precisely because it is the calmer option. That means condensation: warm body, cold night, enclosed metal box. Crack a window, and take the cover off to air when you get home.

Then there is the range of trips. A Cederberg or Tankwa weekend is cold, dry and high. An overnight fishing trip up the West Coast at Paternoster or Elands Bay is damp and salty. A Karoo run inland is a 20-degree swing between afternoon and 4am. One mattress has to handle all of it, which is why we build on 45, 50 kg/m³ bed-grade foam rather than the cheaper open-cell foam that collapses once it has been damp a few times.

Where Cape bakkies actually end up

Within a few hours of Cape Town you have the Cederberg and Tankwa Karoo to the north, the West Coast run through Yzerfontein, Paternoster and Elands Bay, the Overberg and De Hoop to the east, and the Karoo proper through Ceres and Sutherland. Longer trips head up the N7 toward Namaqualand in flower season or east along the Garden Route to Wilderness and Nature's Valley. Almost all of it is exposed, which is why so many Cape owners sleep in the bin rather than fight a rooftop tent in the wind.

Does it tick the expert buying checklist?

Every guide to buying a bakkie mattress in South Africa ends with the same checklist: high-density foam, enough thickness, a removable weatherproof cover, wheel-arch cutouts and canopy clearance. Here is how the Mr Mattress Bakkie Mattress measures up, point by point.

45, 50 kg/m³ high-density foam Yes. The same bed-grade foam block we use in our house mattresses, with the density published right here on the page, not revealed after you phone for a quote.
Thickness 100mm as standard, with 80mm available on request. The full 100mm is what the category is built around, and it is doing thermal work as much as comfort work, it is the layer between you and a cold steel load bin. If your canopy is low and headroom is tight, ask for the 80mm build instead.
Removable, weatherproof cover Yes. 800gsm Riptech canvas, with a zip-off design so the cover comes off for cleaning instead of the whole mattress going in the bin. Worth comparing directly: Riptech and ripstop covers advertised elsewhere in this category are typically around 400gsm, so ours is roughly double the fabric weight in the same material.
Wheel-arch cutouts Pre-cut on every cab type we sell. No template, no measuring, no waiting for a custom job.
Canopy and tailgate clearance Pre-measured per cab type, so the tailgate closes and a standard canopy keeps usable headroom.
Trial and warranty A 30-day money-back guarantee, a 365-night trial and a 10-year warranty, in writing. The trial is the rare one: as far as we can find, no other South African bakkie-mattress seller offers a sleep trial at all. On warranty, compare what voids it rather than the number of years.

Meet the Maker: Andries Taljaard, founder of Mr Mattress

Hi, I'm Andries

From humble beginnings to thousands of happy sleepers, on beds and now in load bins too. The Bakkie Mattress is cut from the same bed-grade foam as everything else we make, because a bakkie trip shouldn't mean a worse night's sleep.

No fake sales. Just problems solved.

Choose your cab type

Cab type What it fits Price
Double Cab The shortest bin, most common fitment (Hilux, Ranger, D-Max, Navara double cabs) R4,999 R3,499
Super Cab / Extended Cab Mid-length bin R5,099 R3,599
Single Cab The longest bin, uses the most material R5,399 R3,799
Why does Single Cab cost more than Double Cab? A single cab has the least cab and the most bin, so it takes the most foam and canvas to cover properly. Pricing follows the material, not the name.

Bakkie load-bed sleeping around Cape Town and the Western Cape

The Western Cape has a strong camping and outdoor culture, from West Coast overnighters to Cederberg 4x4 trails and the Garden Route further east, and a bakkie load-bed setup is a common way locals do it without towing a trailer or pitching a tent in the wind. A well-fitted load-bed mattress matters more here than it might seem, since a lot of this camping happens on cold, exposed sites where ground-level sleeping is genuinely less comfortable.

Frequently asked questions

How much does a bakkie mattress cost in Cape Town?

Mr Mattress bakkie mattresses are pre-measured per cab type and priced accordingly: R3,499 for Double Cab, R3,599 for Super Cab / Extended Cab, and R3,799 for Single Cab. Buy online and it ships straight away, no quote needed.

Do you deliver bakkie mattresses in Cape Town?

Yes, and delivery is free across South Africa including Cape Town and the greater Western Cape, with a small fee for extreme rural areas. Orders are made at our Cape Town facility, so they ship locally rather than being trucked in.

Is this a custom-cut mattress?

No. Every cab type we sell is already measured and on file, wheel-arch notches included. You're buying a known, ready-made fit for your bakkie, the same way our bed mattress sizes are pre-measured, not a made-to-order job that takes weeks.

Which bakkie models does this fit?

Our three cab types (Double Cab, Super Cab / Extended Cab, Single Cab) cover the load bin shape used across Toyota Hilux, Ford Ranger, Isuzu D-Max, Nissan Navara and most other double, extended and single cab bakkies on South African roads. If you're not sure which cab type you have, tell us your make and model in the order note at checkout, or WhatsApp us on 087 292 1957 before you buy.

What is the mattress made from?

45-50 kg/m3 high-density foam, the same grade used in our bed mattresses, not soft camping-pad foam, wrapped in a tough 800gsm Riptech canvas cover with a zip-off design for easy cleaning.

What if I'm not sure which cab type fits my bakkie?

Tell us your bakkie's make, model and cab type in the order note at checkout, or WhatsApp us on 087 292 1957 before you buy. We'll confirm the fit before it ships.

How thick is the bakkie mattress?

100mm as standard, with 80mm available on request. The 100mm is the full thickness the category is built around: it keeps you clear of a hard, ribbed load-bin floor and, just as importantly, insulates you from a steel bin that loses heat all night. It still rolls up to store behind the seats. If you run a low canopy and headroom is genuinely tight, we build the same mattress at 80mm on request, just tell us when you order.

Does it work under a canopy or with a rooftop tent?

Yes. At the standard 100mm it still leaves working headroom under a standard bakkie canopy, and 80mm is available on request if your canopy is unusually low, and it is a common setup for owners who sleep in the bin rather than in a rooftop tent. If you run a rooftop tent and want foam for the tent itself instead of the load bin, that is a custom size and we quote it on our custom-cut foam page.

Does it fit a Nissan NP200, Ford Bantam or Corsa Utility?

Not from the three stock cab shapes. Nissan NP200, Ford Bantam and Chevrolet Corsa Utility are half-ton bakkies with a much smaller bin than a full-size single cab, so they need a true custom cut rather than a pre-measured cab shape. Send those measurements through our custom-cut foam page and we will quote it.

Which towns in Cape Town do you deliver to?

All of them. Delivery is free across South Africa, including Cape Town CBD, Bellville, Durbanville, Milnerton, Table View, Brackenfell, Kuils River, Somerset West, Stellenbosch and Paarl, with a small fee only for extreme rural areas.

Will a bakkie mattress survive a Cape winter and the coast?

This is the province where the cover earns its keep. The Western Cape is South Africa's only winter-rainfall region, so a winter trip here means genuine sustained wet rather than the dry winters the rest of the country plans around, and the coastal routes add salt air on top. The mattress ships with a weatherproof zip-off canvas cover that takes the weather and unzips for a machine wash when it comes home. The 45, 50 kg/m3 bed-grade foam core matters just as much: cheap open-cell foam breaks down once it has been damp repeatedly, which is exactly what a Cape winter does to it.
