Bakkie Mattress Gauteng: Pre-Measured & Ready to Ship
Gauteng is the busiest bakkie market in the country and the shortest-notice one. Most orders here go out to people who decided on Wednesday that they are leaving on Friday, which is exactly why we hold every cab shape in stock at Kempton Park rather than cutting to order.
Built to fit your load bin exactly, wheel-arch notches and all. No custom order, no waiting weeks for a cut, no guessing on price. Delivered free anywhere in Gauteng.

Made and delivered in Gauteng
Our Gauteng manufacturing facility and our store at 6 West St, Kempton Park CBD mean a Gauteng order ships from close to home, whether you are heading out from Johannesburg, Pretoria or anywhere else in the province. Popular with Kruger and Magaliesberg weekenders who need the load bin ready before Friday traffic.
Free delivery reaches every corner of Gauteng, including Johannesburg, Pretoria, Centurion, Sandton, Midrand, Kempton Park, Benoni, Boksburg, Roodepoort, Krugersdorp and Vanderbijlpark. Most orders are used for Kruger and Magaliesberg weekends, under a canopy or open-bin with the tailgate down. Prefer to see it before you buy? Visit us at 6 West St, Kempton Park CBD and look at the foam and canvas in person, prices are fixed and published, so there is no quote step in between.
How Mr Mattress compares
Shopping around in Gauteng usually turns up two kinds of alternative: a Pretoria upholsterer who will custom-cut a mattress if you can visit and wait, or a nationwide outdoor-gear brand selling a tough cover with no trial period. Mr Mattress gives you both halves without the trade-off. Every cab type is already measured and cut, wheel-arch notches included, so there is no custom-order wait. Our store at 6 West St, Kempton Park CBD is there if you want to see the foam and cover in person, and if you would rather just try it, a 365-night trial and 10-year warranty do the job better than a showroom visit ever could.
Sleeping in a bakkie on the Highveld
Gauteng is where the trip starts, not where it ends. You load on Thursday night, sit in Friday traffic, and the bin has to be packed before you leave. That is a different problem to solve than a destination province, and it is why we keep every cab shape in stock at 6 West St, Kempton Park CBD instead of cutting to order, you can collect on the way out of town.
The Highveld sits around 1,700 m above sea level, and that altitude is the part people underestimate. A steel load bin loses heat fast on a clear winter night, and Gauteng winter nights regularly drop to low single digits with frost on the ground by morning. The bin itself becomes the cold surface you are lying on. Foam thickness is what stands between you and that steel, which is the single strongest argument for taking the 100mm standard rather than the thinner option, the extra 20mm is doing thermal work, not just comfort work.
The other Gauteng reality is gravel. Most weekend routes out of the province, the approach roads into the Magaliesberg, the back way into Pilanesberg, the last stretch to a Kruger gate, finish on dirt. Dust gets into everything in the bin. The zip-off canvas cover comes off and goes in a domestic washing machine, which matters more here than the spec sheet suggests.
Where Gauteng bakkies actually end up
Weekend range out of Johannesburg and Pretoria covers the Magaliesberg and Hartbeespoort within an hour, Pilanesberg and Sun City in two, the Vaal and Parys south-west, and Dullstroom or the Kruger gates by early evening on a Friday. Longer runs head for the Waterberg, Golden Gate or Sodwana. The common thread is a Friday-afternoon departure with the bin already loaded, and a first night slept somewhere between Gauteng and the actual destination.
Does it tick the expert buying checklist?
Every guide to buying a bakkie mattress in South Africa ends with the same checklist: high-density foam, enough thickness, a removable weatherproof cover, wheel-arch cutouts and canopy clearance. Here is how the Mr Mattress Bakkie Mattress measures up, point by point.
| 45-50 kg/m³ high-density foam | Yes. The same bed-grade foam block we use in our house mattresses, with the density published right here on the page, not revealed after you phone for a quote. |
| Thickness | 100mm as standard, with 80mm available on request. The full 100mm is what the category is built around, and it is doing thermal work as much as comfort work, it is the layer between you and a cold steel load bin. If your canopy is low and headroom is tight, ask for the 80mm build instead. |
| Removable, weatherproof cover | Yes. 800gsm Riptech canvas, with a zip-off design so the cover comes off for cleaning instead of the whole mattress going in the bin. Worth comparing directly: Riptech and ripstop covers advertised elsewhere in this category are typically around 400gsm, so ours is roughly double the fabric weight in the same material. |
| Wheel-arch cutouts | Pre-cut on every cab type we sell. No template, no measuring, no waiting for a custom job. |
| Canopy and tailgate clearance | Pre-measured per cab type, so the tailgate closes and a standard canopy keeps usable headroom. |
| Trial and warranty | A 30-day money-back guarantee, a 365-night trial and a 10-year warranty, in writing. The trial is the rare one: as far as we can find, no other South African bakkie-mattress seller offers a sleep trial at all. On warranty, compare what voids it rather than the number of years. |

Mining, logistics and site work in Gauteng
Gauteng is South Africa's mining and logistics hub, not just its biggest city. City Deep in Johannesburg is the largest inland container terminal on the continent, and freight, mining-services and construction contractors run multi-day site work across the province and into neighbouring Mpumalanga and North West. A crew doing three days on a Boksburg or Springs site, or a driver on a multi-day Gauteng to Rustenburg run, needs somewhere to sleep that is not a hotel bill every night.
The legacy West Rand and East Rand gold-mining belt still supports plenty of equipment-supply and mining-services bakkies moving between Krugersdorp, Springs and Carletonville, and a load-bed mattress that is ready to go, rather than waiting on a custom order, matches how short-notice this kind of work usually is.
Frequently asked questions
How much does a bakkie mattress cost in Gauteng?
Mr Mattress bakkie mattresses are pre-measured per cab type and priced accordingly: R3,499 for Double Cab, R3,599 for Super Cab / Extended Cab, and R3,799 for Single Cab. Buy online and it ships straight away, no quote needed.
Do you deliver bakkie mattresses in Gauteng?
Yes, and delivery is free across South Africa including all of Gauteng, with a small fee for extreme rural areas. Our Gauteng manufacturing facility and our store at 6 West St, Kempton Park CBD mean a Gauteng order ships from close to home, whether you are in Johannesburg, Pretoria or anywhere else in the province.
Is this a custom-cut mattress?
No. Every cab type we sell is already measured and on file, wheel-arch notches included. You're buying a known, ready-made fit for your bakkie, the same way our bed mattress sizes are pre-measured, not a made-to-order job that takes weeks.
Which bakkie models does this fit?
Our three cab types (Double Cab, Super Cab / Extended Cab, Single Cab) cover the load bin shape used across Toyota Hilux, Ford Ranger, Isuzu D-Max, Nissan Navara and most other double, extended and single cab bakkies on South African roads. If you're not sure which cab type you have, tell us your make and model in the order note at checkout, or WhatsApp us on 087 292 1957 before you buy.
What is the mattress made from?
45-50 kg/m3 high-density foam, the same grade used in our bed mattresses, not soft camping-pad foam, wrapped in a tough 800gsm Riptech canvas cover with a zip-off design for easy cleaning.
What if I'm not sure which cab type fits my bakkie?
Tell us your bakkie's make, model and cab type in the order note at checkout, or WhatsApp us on 087 292 1957 before you buy. We'll confirm the fit before it ships.
How thick is the bakkie mattress?
100mm as standard, with 80mm available on request. The 100mm is the full thickness the category is built around: it keeps you clear of a hard, ribbed load-bin floor and, just as importantly, insulates you from a steel bin that loses heat all night. It still rolls up to store behind the seats. If you run a low canopy and headroom is genuinely tight, we build the same mattress at 80mm on request, just tell us when you order.
Does it work under a canopy or with a rooftop tent?
Yes. At the standard 100mm it still leaves working headroom under a standard bakkie canopy, and 80mm is available on request if your canopy is unusually low, and it is a common setup for owners who sleep in the bin rather than in a rooftop tent. If you run a rooftop tent and want foam for the tent itself instead of the load bin, that is a custom size and we quote it on our custom-cut foam page.
Does it fit a Nissan NP200, Ford Bantam or Corsa Utility?
Not from the three stock cab shapes. Nissan NP200, Ford Bantam and Chevrolet Corsa Utility are half-ton bakkies with a much smaller bin than a full-size single cab, so they need a true custom cut rather than a pre-measured cab shape. Send those measurements through our custom-cut foam page and we will quote it.
Which towns in Gauteng do you deliver to?
All of them. Delivery is free across South Africa, including Johannesburg, Pretoria, Centurion, Sandton, Midrand, Kempton Park, Benoni, Boksburg, Roodepoort, Krugersdorp and Vanderbijlpark, with a small fee only for extreme rural areas.
Is a bakkie mattress warm enough for a Highveld winter night?
The mattress itself is the insulation layer between you and a steel load bin, and on the Highveld that matters more than almost anywhere else in the country. At 1,700 m the bin radiates heat away fast once the sun goes down, and Gauteng winter nights frequently reach low single digits. Our 100mm standard thickness is the meaningful upgrade here, the extra foam is what keeps the cold of the bin floor off you. Pair it with a proper sleeping bag rather than a duvet and a Highveld winter night in the bin is genuinely comfortable.
