Humidity, condensation and the KZN bakkie sleeper
KwaZulu-Natal's defining condition is humidity, and humidity is the enemy of any foam mattress that lives in a closed canopy. A subtropical coastal night plus a sealed load bin plus a sleeping adult produces condensation on the inside of the canopy, and that moisture has to go somewhere. In practice it goes into whatever is on the bin floor.
Two things deal with it. First, ventilation, leave a canopy window cracked even when it feels warm enough not to bother. Second, a cover you can actually remove: ours unzips completely and goes into a normal washing machine, so a damp trip does not turn into a permanently musty mattress. This is the single most common mistake we see with foam in KZN, and it is entirely avoidable.
The province also asks one mattress to cover a wide climate range. A Sodwana or St Lucia diving and fishing weekend is warm and wet. A Drakensberg trip at altitude in winter is properly cold, with snow on the high berg some years. The Wild Coast run south is somewhere in between and mostly gravel. Where KZN bakkies actually end up
North of Durban the run goes to Sodwana Bay, St Lucia and Kosi Bay for diving and fishing, much of it on sand tracks that need low pressures and a bakkie that is already loaded. Inland the Drakensberg through Underberg, Himeville and the Sani Pass road climbs into genuinely cold territory. South, the Wild Coast route toward Port Edward and beyond turns to gravel quickly. One mattress covers humid coastal nights and freezing mountain ones, which is a lot to ask of cheap foam.

What is the mattress made from?
45-50 kg/m3 high-density foam, the same grade used in our bed mattresses, not soft camping-pad foam, wrapped in a tough 800gsm Riptech canvas cover with a zip-off design for easy cleaning.

How thick is the bakkie mattress?
100mm as standard, with 80mm available on request. The 100mm is the full thickness the category is built around: it keeps you clear of a hard, ribbed load-bin floor and, just as importantly, insulates you from a steel bin that loses heat all night. It still rolls up to store behind the seats. If you run a low canopy and headroom is genuinely tight, we build the same mattress at 80mm on request, just tell us when you order.
Does it work under a canopy or with a rooftop tent?
Yes. At the standard 100mm it still leaves working headroom under a standard bakkie canopy, and 80mm is available on request if your canopy is unusually low, and it is a common setup for owners who sleep in the bin rather than in a rooftop tent. If you run a rooftop tent and want foam for the tent itself instead of the load bin, that is a custom size and we quote it on our custom-cut foam page.
Does it fit a Nissan NP200, Ford Bantam or Corsa Utility?
Not from the three stock cab shapes. Nissan NP200, Ford Bantam and Chevrolet Corsa Utility are half-ton bakkies with a much smaller bin than a full-size single cab, so they need a true custom cut rather than a pre-measured cab shape. Send those measurements through our custom-cut foam page and we will quote it.

How do I stop condensation making my bakkie mattress damp in KZN?
Ventilation and a removable cover. KZN's subtropical humidity plus a sealed canopy plus a sleeping adult creates condensation on the inside of the canopy overnight, and that moisture ends up in whatever is on the bin floor. Leave a canopy window slightly open even on a warm night, and when you get home, unzip the canvas cover and wash it, it comes off completely and goes into a domestic machine. Stand the foam on its edge for a few hours to air. Done that way, humidity is a non-issue; ignored, it is what makes foam smell musty after a season.
