Big day-night temperature swings on the Kalahari edge
North West has the widest gap between afternoon and pre-dawn temperature of anywhere most people will take a bakkie for a weekend. The province runs from Pilanesberg and Madikwe out toward the Kalahari edge, and that dry inland air holds almost no heat overnight. A day that hits the mid-thirties can be followed by a night in single digits. People pack for the afternoon they experienced and get caught out at 4am.
The mattress is a bigger part of the answer than most people expect. Lying on a steel load bin, most of your heat loss goes downward into the bin, not upward into the air, so the foam under you does more work than the blanket over you. That is the straightforward case for taking the 100mm standard rather than the thinner build.

What is the mattress made from?
45-50 kg/m3 high-density foam, the same grade used in our bed mattresses, not soft camping-pad foam, wrapped in a tough 800gsm Riptech canvas cover with a zip-off design for easy cleaning.

How thick is the bakkie mattress?
100mm as standard, with 80mm available on request. The 100mm is the full thickness the category is built around: it keeps you clear of a hard, ribbed load-bin floor and, just as importantly, insulates you from a steel bin that loses heat all night. It still rolls up to store behind the seats. If you run a low canopy and headroom is genuinely tight, we build the same mattress at 80mm on request, just tell us when you order.
Does it work under a canopy or with a rooftop tent?
Yes. At the standard 100mm it still leaves working headroom under a standard bakkie canopy, and 80mm is available on request if your canopy is unusually low, and it is a common setup for owners who sleep in the bin rather than in a rooftop tent. If you run a rooftop tent and want foam for the tent itself instead of the load bin, that is a custom size and we quote it on our custom-cut foam page.
Does it fit a Nissan NP200, Ford Bantam or Corsa Utility?
Not from the three stock cab shapes. Nissan NP200, Ford Bantam and Chevrolet Corsa Utility are half-ton bakkies with a much smaller bin than a full-size single cab, so they need a true custom cut rather than a pre-measured cab shape. Send those measurements through our custom-cut foam page and we will quote it.
Which towns in North West do you deliver to?

Why do North West nights feel so much colder than the day suggested?
Dry inland air holds very little heat, so the province swings hard between a mid-thirties afternoon and a single-digit pre-dawn, especially out toward the Kalahari edge. The practical consequence in a bakkie is that most of your heat loss goes downward into the steel load bin rather than upward into the air, which means the foam underneath you matters more than the blanket on top. That is the clearest argument for the 100mm standard thickness. Add fine gravel dust from the Pilanesberg and Madikwe approach roads and the zip-off washable cover earns its place too.
